5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Laptop, November 7, 2010
I bought this laptop couple days ago and am very satisfied with it. I thought the design might look ugly just looking at the pictures, but the design is very nice.
Anyways here are the pros and cons
Pro: nice sleek design, comfortable keyboard, good performance, reasonable graphic card, cheap price (at least based on my price), light weight, and does not get very hot
Cons: lack of bluetooth (which i hardly use), lack of some ports such as memory card reader (which again I hardly use), sound quality is not very good, arrow keys kinda smooshed together with the rest of the keypads (not really a problem), lack of hoktkeys (which means you have to hold the "fn" button to control the volume and etc)

I really think this is a decent laptop for decent price (unless they raise the price up). Even though there seems to be a lot of cons, i think those are really minor issues (at least for me) and the pros outweight the cons. So if you are look for a decent laptop for a cheap price, I recommend this product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive, sturdy, nice design and fast!, November 25, 2010
Initially I was going to go for a more expensive laptop, and then I stumbled upon the Samsung q430 in a best buy as I was browsing that section of the store. Typically I'm wary of any pc's that are in the local stores as they usually get the watered down versions of laptops where you can find the better, more advanced models online.

While not on sale anymore, it was still relatively inexpensive compared to a lot of the other laptops that were no faster. icore5 2.4 GHZ processor, 4GB of memory, 500GB hard drive, 512 MB Nvidia video card, built-in SD memory card reader, DVD-burner...what's not to like!

Also, while it's easy to overlook something as simple as keyboard layout...it was one of the bigger selling points for me in finding a new laptop. I used to have a powerbook titanium G4 which had a nice keyboard layout, and even now the mac book pros have in my opinion the best keyboard design available in any laptop. The q430's keyboard is quite similar, with the raised, solid, black keys that are responsive, spaced out nicely and provide nice feedback. So once I made the decision to go with a non-mac laptop, I was hoping I could find something comparable in the keyboard area. And the Samsung q430 I think is the closest you can get to having a mac book pro keyboard on a pc laptop. I love this keyboard perhaps with the exception of a smaller than usual shift key, I love it.

If there was anything I would change about the laptop, perhaps it would be to not have a glossy screen as sometimes the reflection can be annoying. But nevertheless the screen is bright and strong when I need it to be and I notice it less and less.

Wireless works great, 3 usb ports, decent built in webcam, fairly lightweight and has HDMI out! I have even dropped it once already, transport it a lot and everything seems to be going smoothly with no issues. For the price, and even price aside, I think you can't go wrong. I truly feel this is a solid laptop, especially when coming from the world of sturdy, apple quality laptops previously.

    It's a winner!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Product, December 16, 2010
I have been trying this laptop for two days now and I am very satisfied by it.
    The Good:
    1. Light for its size. I had a Dell XPS M1330 before and this feels lighter than that even though its a 14 incher !

    2. Fast processor. The turbo boost on its Core i5 really makes it snappy for everyday work and also for photo and video editing. The new Office 2010 runs smoothly on it.

    3. Looks expensive. The aluminium on its lid and around its keyboard give the product a distinct look.

    4. Graphics management. The intel HD and nVidia 310m graphics switch seamlessly according to the programs needs. Runs 1080p HD video (native and flash) smoothly without any hitch.

    5. The Keyboard is this laptop's strong point. Its chiclet style and good to type on.

    6. Heat management is great on this laptop. The CPU and graphics card temperature didn't exceed 65C even after several hours of (moderate) use. The outside also felt cool.

    The Bad:
    1. Touchpad could have been better. The scrolling seems incosistence. (I am not sure if the touch pad or Windows 7 is to blame)
    2. The battery life could have been better. It is giving me 3.5-4hrs on a charge with moderate use.

    The Verdict:

Its a steal. I was looking at the Envy 14 before this but with this laptop's price, features and looks, I am glad I got it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Designed Laptop at the Right Price, December 16, 2010
I've done a lot of research and I've been looking for a good 14 inch laptop for a while and this Samsung seems to be the perfect fit for those of us on a budget. Also to note, this is the Q430, which is not exactly like the Q410 sold at Best Buy. The ports are in all different places and the Q430 doesn't have the "scoop" that raises the palm rest like the one at Best Buy. It also has a 500GB hard drive as opposed to the 640 GB in the Q410 at BB. Other than that, it's the same thing. And the Q410 one is $150 more.

    The Good

I love the size of this laptop. It's small and light and just perfect for your lap while sitting on the couch. 14 inches seems to be the perfect compromise between the larger 15.6" laptops (which add weight and unnecessary numberpad which throws off the centering of the keyboard) and the smaller 11 and 13 inchers which sacrifice screen real estate for the lighter weight.

The screen is bright and crisp, no complaints. Boot time is very good, especially coming back from sleep. The look of the laptop is great, nice and sleek and well designed aesthetically. The brushed aluminum gives it a solid feel and a professional, stylish look.

They keyboard layout is perfect for me, the keys have a nice tactile feel to them and seem to be spread out just right. I wish the keyboard were backlit, but that's not a negative.

    The Iffy

Battery life is not awesome. I seem to get about 3-4 hours of "active" use out of it, like having Firefox open with about 15 tabs, a word processor open, and maybe a couple other apps running (other than what running in the system tray). I'd be interested if Samsung offered and extended life battery for the Q430.

I rarely use the mouse trackpad, so I can't really comment on it other than it seems to work normally for me. Who can stand using those things anyway? So...... slow..... I just use the Logitech VX Nano Cordless Laser Mouse for Notebooks anyway wherever I am. So much faster and easier to use than the touchpad.

I wish it had a backlit keyboard, bluetooth, and a blu-ray drive, but that's why this laptop is as inexpensive as it is. I can live without 'em.

Overall it's a very decent laptop at a great price.

2-0 out of 5 stars It functions, but mostly as a work of art., December 15, 2010
I bought this from Best Buy the day after Thanksgiving for $699 and thought it was a steal and, I have tried and tried to like this machine because it was such a good deal. Well, it's only a good deal if it works as you want it to.

    The Good:
It's sleek, I like the stainless steel appearance, it's very quiet, and for that I give it extra points, the screen is dazzling for movies or video, there is lots of storage space, it is user friendly with good instructions, the battery life is also quite good, and it is light weight. You also get a lot of features for the money.

The Bad: This will not affect everyone (I am a petite person) the keyboard island design is too big (i.e. the keys are spread further apart than normal) and the length of the bottom section of the computer is too long causing (for me) discomfort while trying to type. The computer is also not as fast as I would expect (my prior processor was an Intel duel core and faster than this. Why? Who knows, doesn't make sense). The screen itself presents in widescreen format, like a movie, so viewing space is lost, mostly on the bottom, as the 'picture' is stretched. Might be OK for some. I don't care for it.

    The Ugly:
Navigating the pointer and mouse pad is like trying to drive a car without a steering wheel. The 'intelligent' touch pad by Elan is not ready for prime time. The first thing I had to do was disable 10 of the 11 features that can be adjusted. To not disable these features is to relinquish control of your screen to random actions that the pad thinks you want. After spending hours adjusting pad sensitivity and mouse speed it is still very unsatisfactory. Another thing is the pointer gets lost on the edges of the screen and will stick there. Samsung has built in a feature to help you locate it - just hit 'control' and rings will flash to alert you to the location - suggesting they are aware the pointer has a penchant to go missing. Also, sometimes the pointer is both hypersensitive and therefore difficult to position on what you want to select because it jumps, while at the same time (and on the same setting) difficult to re-initiate motion once it is corralled, requiring a lot of finger pressure.

All in all I would not recommend this for anyone easily frustrated by pointer issues or anyone under 5' 5", unless you have an exceptionally long fingers.

3-0 out of 5 stars No system software, December 9, 2010
When I received this laptop I was surprised that there were no system software disks included. As a programmer I like to modify my system to my requirements. This is my first windows 7 system and apparently this (no disks) is common practice. It still seems strange to me but it is not unique to Samsung as I initially thought. As far as the Samsung customer service, I do think they should offer a link to the Windows 7 ISO if they are expecting the customer to figure it out. Otherwise they should offer a system cd upon request.

The laptop itself is pretty nice. I am not sure if the battery actually lasts for 7 hours but the battery life is certainly better than my macbook which also advertises 7 hours of battery life.

The one thing I don't like about the design is the placement of the arrow keys on the keyboard. They are squeezed in and force the right Shift key into an unorthodox size/position. It is a bit disconcerting if you are used to a lot of typing. Other than that, it seems pretty reasonable for the price.

    1-0 out of 5 stars Lemony, November 13, 2010
I bought this laptop in August and have had nothing but trouble with it. The wireless keeps cutting out and an error message displays saying that my wireless router is not working properly (all the while my husband is happily working away on the internet with his Toshiba laptop).
I sent it back and they supposedly repaired the wireless problem. Went to use it again and the laptop displayed a message saying that hard drive failure was imminent and to please call the manufacturer. Also, prior to the hard drive failure message, the internet problem reared its ugly head again.
I called Samsung and they refused to exchange this machine, but instead offered to try to repair it again. So off it goes again....back to Samsung....beware of this laptop. By the way, Im writing this review on my husbands Toshiba laptop.

4-0 out of 5 stars Price drop!, December 13, 2010
Ordered this Dec 1 as part of Amazon's Cyber Week lightning deal promo. It is a great all around laptop. And with Amazon Prime, I got it exactly 26 hours after I ordered it.

BUT upon reviewing the product, I see that it is now $50 cheaper than the actual "promo" price! Do I get a refund (like major outlets/retailers do)? How can I do this??

Well, the further price drop is even more reason to get it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MB OK, May 24, 2010
The white Macbook was updated on May 18 2010. There are minor differences between the 2010 Macbook and 2009's model, detailed below.

    The UPGRADES are

    1) Geforce Nvidia 320M integrated graphics processor with 48 processing cores. This is better than the Geforce 9400M in last years model. Useful for content creation.

2)Mini display port now supports video AND audio with a compatible Mini-DP to HDMI adapter. (Last years model only supported video)

    Thats it.

STANDARD FEATURES - from last years model (minor changes noted in brackets)

    Polycarbonate unibody
Core 2 Duo processor (2.4ghz - up from 2.26 ghz)
1280 x 800 resolution Glossy LED backlit screen,
    iSight camera,

    2 GB Ram - 1gb ram sticks x 2
    250gb hard drive
    8x slot-loading SuperDrive dvd burner

Large multi-touch trackpad ( Intertial scrolling is now enabled ),
    2 USB 2.0 ports ,
    Wi-Fi - 802.11n specification; 802.11a/b/g compatible, Bluetooth 2.1 and Gigabit Ethernet -10/100/1000.

Inbuilt battery - (which Apple advertises as capable of lasting between 9 to 10 hours.) Not true. Real world battery life is between 3 to 6 hours depending on what tasks you use your computer for.

Software included is OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and the iLife 09 suite of content creation tools. A 1 year warranty on parts and 90 day telephone technical support is standard.

The Macbook as it is - is good for basic computing activities - such as browsing the web, typing articles or watching movies. However, if you're planning to buy a Macbook for multimedia work, such as editing high resolution photos or HD videos and plan to use multiple applications at the same time, please ensure that you upgrade the ram from 2gb to 4gb.

    Why?

Because using a macbook with 2 gb of ram (such as this one) to multitask is a GREAT way to drive yourself crazy as the computer struggles to keep up. Try editing 10 megapixel RAW images while playing music in iTunes with Safari open. 2gb of ram is not at all adequate for multitasking / using processor intensive applications on a Macbook. I understand that Apple has to differentiate between the Macbook and MBPro to justify the price differences but skimping on the ram and putting 2gb inside a $999 product and thus, affecting the user experience is not the way to do it.

Upgrading the ram yourself from 2gb to 4gb is a great idea - EXCEPT - the price of DDR3 1066 mhz ram (compatible with Macbook and MB Pro) is still high. Currently, Crucial CT2KIT25664BC1067 4GB 204-PIN PC3-8500 SODIMM DDR3 Memory KIT (2GBx2) costs $90.99. So that brings your total to $1060 ($969 MB + $90.99 Ram) if you upgrade your Macbook's ram

So for only $100 more than your Macbook, (if you take into account the cost of the ram upgrade) a viable alternative is the standard Apple MacBook Pro MC374LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop which costs $1160 on Amazon. The MBP 13 comes with the added benefits of a more durable aluminum unibody, a backlit keyboard, an SD card slot, a firewire 800 port and most importantly, 4gb of ram. Which allows you to multitask effortlessly.

If you're going to use the Macbook for any computationally demanding activities such as content creation, editing large RAW images or HD videos you should upgrade the ram to 4gb or just buy the standard MBPro 13 inch. The processor and hard drive are the same in both the MB and MBPro 13 ( 2.4 ghz Core 2 duo and 250gb hard drives ) But the 4gb ram will make a big difference in the daily usage experience.

However, if you only want to use the Macbook for general tasks like writing articles, browsing websites or watching movies, it will handle those duties adequately. At the same time, also keep in mind that if you only need a laptop for basic duties, many other manufacturers offer less expensive laptops which are just as capable.

    Hope this helps!

As a student, I've been trying to find a well-built computer for under $1000. For me, the MacBook is a perfect fit.

    Pros:
-The touchpad is incredible for web browsing. I have been using PCs notebooks for years, and I have never liked touchpads, but this has proved to be an exception. I can easily do two-button clicking, scrolling with two fingers, and going back and forth through pages with three fingers. I find I no longer do I have to lug around a USB mouse (except if I want to some gaming).
-The computer starts up in 20 seconds without having to wait for background processes to load up (unlike windows).
-The build quality of the MacBook is unmatched for its price. The unibody does not creak at all when handling it.
-Multi-tasking is surprisingly good for only 2GB RAM. The only hiccups I have had were at the first couple of seconds of playing movies on iTunes with a lot of other programs running.

    Cons:
    -No HDMI port
-Battery does not last 10 hours (about 4-6 for me with iTunes and Wi-Fi running). Still, it is much longer than the competitors for the price range and size.

Even though the build is solid, you may want to get one of these covers if you worry about scratching:
Speck Products See Thru Satin, Soft Touch Hard Shell Case, for 13-inch MacBook Aluminum Unibody/Black Keyboard (Black) - DOES NOT FIT WHITE MACBOOK
They snap on in seconds and look great.

If you are a student who is not looking to do any graphic design I highly recommend getting the MacBook instead of the MacBook Pro if you want to save money. Sure it only has 2 GB RAM, but you can easily upgrade it now for $100 Crucial CT2KIT25664BC1067 4GB 204-PIN PC3-8500 SODIMM DDR3 Memory KIT (2GBx2) or wait a year and do it for about $50.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Word: Perfect, July 27, 2010
As a student, I was pretty hesitant to get the MacBook, but after MONTHS of exhaustive research looking for the right laptop (I'm a networking student, and also I am working on my A+ PC Repair certification, so I know a thing or two about PC's and Windows), I decided that I needed a change in my life. I've had an IBM ThinkPad T60 last me four years through school, but after 4 re-install's of XP, I've had enough of the constant attacks of viruses, spyware, etc...and I decided to go with the MacBook.

    PROS:

Perfect for web browsing, e-mail, and document creation.
Comes with great features right out of the box: iLife simply rocks; it comes with PhotoBooth, Garageband (where you can create your own music or learn to how play an instrument), Preview, and iMovie (it's basically an easier version of Windows Movie Maker)
Time Machine for backing up documents and pictures, which is FAR SUPERIOR than using the Backup Feature in Windows.
Wi-Fi is SO EASY to set-up using what Apple calls "Airport", just go to the wi-fi antenna at the top of the right-hand corner and set-up right there.
Printing: Coming from a Windows world, and living in a household with a wireless network, setting up a printer was a pain in the butt with Windows, with Mac, it's SO EASY to set-up and begin printing.
BlueTooth: BlueTooth is common in all laptops nowadays, and again, like setting up a printer, it basically connects with the BlueTooth device automatically.
MagSafe Adapter: Apple introduced this idea called MagSafe. If someone got caught on your power cord, it would take the cord and not the computer. I can't tell you how many times my dogs got caught on my IBM power cord and basically almost took the computer with it.
Battery Life: Wow, what a difference. I was coming from a half-hour battery life on my IBM, although Apple says that the battery can last on a 10 hours on a single charge, in the real world, it's falls under 6 hours, but still this is pretty incredible.

    CONS:

2GB of RAM. Now coming from a Windows world, Windows is a memory hogger, so the more RAM you have in a Windows system, you are good to go, but with a Mac, it's different. Now if you are compressing 1080p video on a MacBook, the system starts to hick-up trying to catch-up. My advice? Upgrade to 4GB or get the MacBook Pro.
EXPENSIVE: Like all Apple products, it's pretty expensive. I was pretty hesitant to buy a MacBook because it was pretty pricey and being a student i.e. poor, I needed to save up a good chunk of money to buy one of these machines.

So if you are in the market for a new laptop, only need to do some document creating, and web-browsing this Mac is for you. If you want to do some high-end video compression, go with the MacBook Pro since the Pro lines are more aimed at high-end video production. This is definitely a perfect system if all you want is just web-browsing and document creation.

    Happy Shopping!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love MacBook Hate Amazon, September 10, 2010
I am totally loving the MacBook I give it 5 stars but I have to be honest and give Amazon 0 stars! I got my MacBook and it didn't work, it had scratches all over the front. Now I know Amazon sells Used and Refurbished but I paid for a NEW MacBook and they represented it as new as it says NEW right on my receipt. I drove the 60 miles to the Apple Store to have someone look at it and they told me it was clearly a refurbished computer and had been used before!!! Not right Amazon, so buyers beware when you shop for things through this website.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent low-powered portable notebook, August 20, 2010
So your in the market for a new laptop, maybe your a student. You need something portable, no 17 inch screens here. It needs to be light, well built, and easy to slip into a bag, for say, a ten minute walk on campus. But at the same time, you don't want a netbook. You don't want to squint at an 11 inch screen, type on a cramped keyboard, or put up with hardware that was out of date five years ago. In other words, you need something that just works, and doesn't complain about it. Well my friend, the Macbook might be just right for you. To me, it's the perfect "in between" product: its not so small and underpowered that your overall computing experience is compromised, while at the same time, its not so big, hot, and heavy that its only ever at home on a desk.

So what kind of computing is the Macbook built for, exactly? Its absolutely perfect for your day to day tasks, emails, word processing, web browsing (Hats off to Apple, after you get used to the multi-touch touchpad, every other laptop you touch feels sluggish and outdated) I'm sure with a serviceable C2D and a GT320, you could get away with some light content creation (Photo/Video editing, etc), but if you plan on using more intensive applications regularly, you'd probably be better off with a MacbookPro, or any number of higher powered Windows laptops.

Also worth noting are a couple of the Macbooks other superlative features. Exceptional battery life for one, I can easily make it 6 hours on a charge, under moderate use, Wifi, max brightness, everything that drains the battery. Speaking of brightness, the 13 inch LED is spectacular, it's bright without being washed out, colors are vivid and vibrant and despite a relatively low resolution, everything looks sharp. The overall construction and feel of the device, also, is excellent. The key's are well spaced and easy to type on. I also mentioned the touchpad, which combines a glass cover with multitouch to make probably the easiest to use notebook navigation I've ever seen. The laptop itself is very well built, very light, but still very stiff and solid. It doesn't feel fragile, in other words. The bottom can get warm after sustained use, but its also worth mentioning that there are no fan vents, and aside from the HDD spinning up, you won't hear the guts of this machine making a single peep.

To sum up, so far I've loved my experience with the Macbook, its perfect for my needs. Mac OSX fits well on a light processing laptop, and despite modest hardware, for the most part you won't feel it lagging or hanging. It's worth mentioning that I am NOT normally a fan of Apple. I will never buy an Iphone, iMac, or a Mac Tower, and I barely use my iPod. Unlike most Mac users, I am perfectly comfortable using Windows, am a big fan of Windows 7, and i'm no stranger to the unforgiving, enthusiast side of a PC. I've built PC's before, and my main computer right now is a high end, self built gaming PC (PII955/GTX 480). In other words, I'm not the normal Apple customer. But when it comes to a portable laptop that will breeze through every day tasks while providing stability and superb battery life, all wrapped up into that premium hardware/software bundle only Apple can provide, the macbook might just be the only way to go.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Was a PC... now a Mac., May 29, 2010
I'm horrible at reviews and easily impressed so hopefully this does good.
Its an amazing machine, what more can i say.
It does much better than the previous edition of macbook because it now has
    a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 duo processor,
the Nvidia GeForce 320 M graphics processor, and a 10 hour lasting battery which means its as good or even better than the 13 inch macbook pro released last year.

Compared with the macs released this year it still does well, the only difference between this and a 13 inch macbook pro is that the macbook pro has an aluminum body, with up 2.66GHz intel processor and 4GB ram. I guess thats where the 200 dollar price difference comes from.
I also like the new unibody.

If you require a laptop for regular everyday activities this will be more than great

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Mac Machine, September 4, 2010
I will keep my review to key points aimed at perspective buyers. There is an excellent summary page for a Macbook and some really in-depth reviews with specifications and cool buzz words.

    1-Selecting your vendor
Make sure you are getting the right macbook from a source you trust. The 2009 and 2010 models are quite similar visually. Ensure you are getting the right model with the specs you want.

    2-Special Offer
200 dollar discount on ipod touch and 100 dollar discount on printer from apple when you buy a mac product. It usually runs from june to early september, and can compensate the high price of the macbook(you have to be a card carrying educationalist to get it).

    3-Pricing
If price still hits you below the belt, consider refurbished models, last year models, open box models. All of them give apple's one year warranty and all can be brought into apple for repairs. All will cost you a few hundred less.

4-what's the difference from macbook pro?
4gb ram ,aluminum case, light up keyboard, extra ports(firewire/memory sticks) is whats usually mentioned. Macbook pro also has a screen protector built in and an ambient light sensor to dim your screen automatically. The latter two are nice, especially if you plan to treat your macbook like garbage and eat while working on it.
And all this for an additional 200 dollars on top of 1000 you are already paying for a notebook.

    5-software.
Apple is good about not giving you trials. You get legitimate programs, no fills.
When you get a new mac, especially if you are new, go to apple website an watch some introduction videos. They are all under 5 minutes and give excellent summaries of mac basics and fundamentals of software that you just purchased. All of them are free.

    Summary.
Macbook is a cost effective way to get a mac. I hope this review will make your choice a more thorough one.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Mac's are the best!, November 6, 2010
For my entire life, I have been a PC user, up until 2 months ago when my 17 inch Toshiba lap top overheated and started to smoke fumes through its ventilation. The hardware just gave up despite the fact that thing was only about 2 1/2 years old. It was a cheap investment, I paid roughly $600 and expected it to only last me a few years for that price.

Shopping and researching for a new computer, I finally caved in and made the switch to a Mac. And let me say, it has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. Sure, you'll spend upwards of $1000 and more for this, but the quality is a return on this investment. I have no more frozen screens, no more crashing, and no more viruses. Simply put, everything just works and allows me, the user to have an experience that I never would have been able to have on a PC.

It literally took me only 10 minutes maximum to set my Macbook up. I powered it on and automnatically, it recognized my high speed internet connection. I didn't I even have to manually enter an encryption code unlike what I always had to do with a PC. Granted, it took me awhile to get accustomed to the touchpad on the Macbook. The motioning of fingering is quite different from a PC. But with a bit of practice, it becomes second nature.

Safari and Mac Snow Leopard O/S are far superior to Windows Explorer and Windows 7 O/S. I spend less time worrying about configuring the software and troubleshooting problems and spend more time on actually using the applications themselves. My music was transferred effortlessly via it all saved on iTunes.

The battery life and working without an AC plug is acceptable, but not excellent. With my Toshiba lap top, I got barely 1 1/2 hours of battery life whereas with the Macbook, I can get a good 6-8 hours of working just on the battery.

I have no qualms about switching over to a Mac nor I would not hesitate to recommend others about buying a Mac over a junky and cheap PC. Yes, Mac's are expensive for most people, but the user experience is second to none.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Laptop!, September 12, 2010
I have been a PC/Windows person for a long time so every time I needed to purchase a new desktop or laptop I would always end up buying a PC because even when I had the money to get a Mac I never wanted to hand it all over. It's much easier to make a 500-600 dollar purchase than a 1,000 dollar purchase. The final straw for me was when my last laptop contracted a virus that was extremely difficult to remove. I did manage to get it off but the computer hasn't been the same since. It still locks up and crashes on a almost daily basis. That lead me to finally make the switch to Mac. I could not be more pleased. I booted up my MacBook as soon as I got it and the first thing I was happy to see was that there was absolutely no bloatware! Amazing! In the past, when I would get a new computer, I would have to spend at least 30 minutes removing a bunch of programs that were completely pointless. That is not the case with Mac though. I was worried that the transition from Windows to OS X would be hard, but so far it hasn't been. There are some minor things that will take time to get use to, but for the most part it is a very smooth transition. I love that it is a light-weight and very portable machine and yet its packing some awesome specs. That is exactly what I needed it for. I am in my last year of undergrad and planning to go to grad school so I really needed something that I could tote easily and trust to work at a decent speed. It accomplishes both. Over all, I would definitely recommend a Mac to anyone who has the money to get it. Don't hesitate. It is worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money., September 1, 2010
In short, I LOVE this computer! When I bought it around 6 months ago, I was debating whether buying this Mac was worth the extra $500+ over other laptops. Without a doubt after having this one for around a half a year and using my friends new PCs I am so glad I didn't go the cheap route. I will never buy another PC again. If you are worried about switching to a Mac go to the apple website and watch around ten two minute tutorials and you have just learned the basics of a Mac. The following are my pros and cons:

    Pros:

Amazingly fast internet browsing - Twice as fast as the fastest PC I have ever used NO JOKE
Excellent battery life - Depending on the luck of the draw your battery will last you 5-7 hrs.
Multi touch trackpad - Switch screens, applications or go to your desktop with the swipe of a few fingers. The whole trackpad is one large button.
Pre installed programs - iMovie, GarageBand, and iWeb are just the beginning of an amazing lineup of programs that come with this Mac
Ease of use - If you never used a Mac you are 20 minutes away from being an expert
Doesn't get viruses (no security software needed) - Since less than 5% of all computers sold are Macs, nobody makes viruses for them

    Cons:

There are a few online downloads that are PC only and won't work on your Mac - Most new applications being made are all Mac friendly though
Price - Yes it is expensive...but well worth every penny.

If you can afford this computer, you should definitely buy it. I rarely give any product 5 stars, but the Macbook 13" definitely deserves them all. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love the matte screen option. Great computer. Time will tell if its worth the $$, May 11, 2010
After having a 3 year-old Dell die on me (to be fair it was put through multiple trips to and from school in my bag, sometimes while it was still on) and a Toshiba Satellite fail after a year, I was tired of paying bargain prices and receiving a frustrating experience to go with it.

My girlfriend had talked about buying a Mac and I always balked at them as being too expensive. Well, most of the main problems with my old laptops were compatibility issues between hardware and software, often involving frustrating searches for new drivers. Knowing that Apple makes the hardware and develops the software for their computers made me think they would be able to integrate the two aspect better than PC's I have used. I still have nightmares about all the drivers I had to hunt down when I downgraded my Toshiba from Windows Vista to XP.

I had actually purchased a 13" Macbook Pro with a glossy screen from Amazon a few days before Apple did their big upgrade in April 2010. It was a beautiful looking machine and was easy to use after I became accustomed to the differences from a PC, ie; What is the "Finder"? However, the 13" screen was a little small for me. I do some photography work, and I watch movies on it as well so I decided the 15" Macbook Pro would be the way to go. Once they did their upgrade for all their machines I decided to buy directly from Apple.

I debated long and hard on the glossy vs. matte option. Going with the high-res screen (1680 X 1050 as opposed to standard 1440 X 900) was a no-brainer. After doing some online research I also chose the matte option (as opposed to the default glossy screen). I had never actually seen a matte screen as the local Best-Buy didn't have one in stock. I was a little nervous on my decision, but I called Apple tech support and easily arranged for a return on my not-yet-arrived 15" Macbook Pro should I want one with a glossy screen instead. The person I spoke with even arranged for return shipping labels paid for by Apple! I didn't upgrade the harddrive or RAM because I can do those myself, or have them done later, for a lot cheaper than Apple's pricing.

The new 15" w/ the matte screen came and I opened up some high-res You-tube videos and compared it side-by-side to the glossy. This was the middle of the day and the lone window in our living room was creating all sorts of reflections on the glossy screen while the matte was unphased. Sure the blacks on the glossy were a deeper and the colors might have "popped" a little more, but knowing I would be using my laptop in a room lit by daylight or with a bright light, the henious reflections on the glossy screen definitely made it a no-go for me. This was a window that was in front of the computer and wasn't even directly shining on the screen. I was really happy I decided to go matte.

That being said, I have loaded up Photoshop CS5 and it runs great. Way faster than my old laptop. I appreciate a lot of the little touches that Apple puts into their products that are becoming more and more noticable every day I use it. (Such as their search feature is always available with 1 click from the desktop) I plan to buy an Applecare plan towards the end of my one-year warranty period to make sure this lasts me at least 3 years. Hopefully I might be able to keep this for 4 or 5 years.

Overall, if you have the $$ I highly recommend this product.

    Pros-
    - Unibody design is super-sturdy and slim.
    - Love the matte screen
    - The high resolution upgrade helps with multi-tasking, programming, photo-editing, web-browing, ect..
    - Super-fast w/Photoshop
    - Good side-to-side viewing angle, (better than the screen on the Windows-based laptops I have used)
    - Keyboard is very pleasant to use
    - Speakers are adequate
    - Touchpad is awesome! Large and easy to use with 2, 3, and 4 finger controls not found anywhere else
but on a Mac. I rarely use a mouse anymore, which works well for using it on my lap.
    - Quick boot up time. Opening and closing the lid for "sleep mode" waiting time is basically zero.
    - Good battery life

    Cons
    - Expensive (duh)
    - Can get hot on the underneath towards the back where the processor is located.
    - Up and down viewing angle not so good (this is common w/laptops though)
    - Some software not available for Mac
    - USB 2.0 (instead of newer 3.0)
    - Glowing Apple logo on the back of the screen is a bit of advertising I could do without.
    - Sharp Edges on front (can apparently be filed down but I am wary about doing this)
    - No Blu-Ray drive

    Update:

Maybe it is just me, but my Apple seems to have more issues with Flash and streaming internet content than I have ever had with a PC. I know Apple is at war with Adobe and has gone to great lengths to disparage the Flash format. They do not seem to have worked too hard to ensure that Flash content works flawlessly with their machines. Streaming videos will stop or fail to load alltogether. This doesn't happen often, but with a PC I never had any issues like this at all.

    Update x2 (8/30/10)

So my power supply had been giving me intermittent issues (every couple of days the power would come on and go off every couple of seconds for no reason). I called Apple support and they recommended just using the shortened version (the power supply is customizable to be either longer with an additional cord, or not), and then to call them back if the problem continued. The guy I talked to thought the cord that lengthens the setup might be the issue. Well I wasn't have any more problems for a while....

Then yesterday (the day before I started a new job teaching at a university) the power supply quits working completely. I call Apple and they say contact the authorized Apple service providers in my area (neither of which were open that day since it was Sunday). The next day, Monday, I called the 2 authorized service providers in my area, one of which says I need to leave my computer there overnight for testing to determine if I am eligible for a new power supply, and the other which couldn't handle my problem when I was available to come.

Now I try to contact Apple support and all day I have been getting the most ridiculous message that says

"At this moment, the customer support team is not available for your support due to unavoidable reasons.. Sorry for the inconvenience caused.."

I suppose it is impossible for Apple to properly staff their service center, so not being available was of course, unavoidable. So I am stuck with a bogus power cord for now.

    Update x3 (9/2/10)

I decided to choose the option where I call Apple about my problem, instead of them calling me. That worked much better. I received my replacement power cord in the mail today, a Thursday, after my power supply originally quit working altogether on Sunday. I have to send back the old one, which has actually started to work intermittently now. If Apple deems that I replaced a non-broken power supply they are going to charge me $80. We'll see...

5-0 out of 5 stars Video Review: MacBook Pro i5/i7 - Hopefully this video will help, October 10, 2010
I hope this video helps you make up your mind.
You will not regret buying this machine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just as robust as my 13" with a few caveats., June 28, 2010
For summary skip to the bottom. Video to come soon...

I already wrote a review and posted a video on the 13", so I'll spare you the pre-story. The 15" MacBook Pro (Summer 2010 version) is a step up for me. I want to go on record by saying that I did NOT opt for the high res screen, and I'll tell you why in a moment. I'm still an MCSA and an MCTS, and Microsoft is still primary in my world, but I access these resources via Apple.

First, I want to clarify why I chose to buy the 15" when I had a 13" that was sufficient. Because I run VMs a lot (I have reviews of Parallels and VMWare), the real estate of the screen was very important. The 13" handled everything I threw at it like a champ, but I needed more screen area. I also needed a stronger multitask processor to keep up with the demands I put upon it. The 2010 version of the MacBooks achieve gains in three key areas: The processor, which on the 15" and 17" models is the Core i5 and i7 models; the video cards, which again, on the 15" and 17" models are improved with newer technology; and the power management.

The previous processor was the Core 2 Duo - an older technology but not a slouch by any means. It was and is a very powerful processor, all things considered, and the 13" was able to deal with everything I threw at it, including multiple VMs at the same time and video encoding processes. Where the Core 2 Duo struggles is with multi-tasking speed; while it can handle multiple processes, it allocates resources towards the most intensive of what's running at the detriment of everything else. In other words, if you encode a video at a medium resolution, you would find that the machine was nearly unusable otherwise; not frozen or dirt slow, but slow enough to be annoying. The fan would come on and the heat would multiply, and you often would fear for the poor MacBook's life. Not so with the i5. It also does get hot - hotter, in fact, than the Core 2 Duo - but even though it's dealing with intensive processes, it never breaks stride with other applications that might be running. You could encode video, then jump over to your email and work as if nothing were going on. The laptop's fan would be going nearly full blast and the heat would be expunged at an exponential rate, but the laptop would not slow down. I consider that impressive, especially given the fact that battery life did not suffer from older years. The i7 is even more powerful than the i5; but the primary reason I could not consider that version has to do with the heat. It's so extreme it's got people online worried about cooking eggs. I know they're not exaggerating; the i5 can get quite hot, so if the i7 is as strong as I know it is, I can only imagine how hot it must get.

The video cards have been improved in the new MacBooks. They are newer versions of the NVidia cards that were released, and some of the MacBooks have the higher end Intel integrated chips. If you don't understand some of the video card technology, there are dedicated video cards and then there are integrated cards. The dedicated cards mean simply that they have their own memory and don't share the RAM of the computer. Integrated, as evident by the name, uses shared RAM to function, either in whole or in part. The integrated chips are lower cost, obviously, at the trade of a performance hit - the RAM it's sharing is inaccessible to the OS and applications, and because the RAM is always a chunk of other RAM, there is an effective tug-of-war going on when using the integrated card. It's really popular in lower end laptops because of the price point - if you paid less than $700 for your laptop chances are it's got an integrated card. All of the lower priced 13" Apples (MacBook, $1199 MacBook Pro, MacBook Air) have integrated chips. The Air might have gotten bumped to NVidia, not sure. In any case, Apple has mixed some models with integrated and dedicated chips, so that less intense processes use the integrated and higher processes switch automatically to dedicated, which is more powerful. Most casual users will think this a pointless feature; but it's good to have for battery life.

Speaking of which, the new MacBooks feature a newer version of the MagSafe power adapter. Due to fraying and melting issues with the previous models, Apple has seen fit to redesign this adapter to address the issue. It now holds a lot more solidly than before, and is partially cylindrical instead of rectangular (you can see images above, of course). The cylinder part is where the fraying most commonly occurred, so it makes sense why they did this change. The actual cable itself also feels more solid; kudos to Apple for improving this. It's also retroactively compatible, so if you buy a new adapter you'll probably get the newer version, and it should work fine for your model (assuming it's a MagSafe version and not the plug-in style from old times). The new 13" MacBook Pro claims a battery life of up to 10 hours due in part to the newer video card; the 15" that I'm reviewing here has already shown improved battery life over the older 13", even at maximum screen brightness. The usual activities will of course kill the battery: VMs, video encoding, audio recording, anything where there is a constant stream of data going one way or the other, basically.

One area of disappointment coming from the 13": The speakers. Because the 15" sports actual speaker grills instead of the embedded speaker of the 13", I somewhat expected at least slightly better audio quality. To my surprise and dismay, I did not receive it. I do a lot of audio records of songs and I use Sennheiser HD-280 Professional Headphones...but the problem is, a song can sound perfect in the headphones, but then I listen to it on the MacBook's speakers and the same song sounds absolutely terrible. I know it can't be the song that's bad, because the headphones are spot on with the way it should sound; but the MacBook's speakers just separate sound streams too much. It's hard to describe, but it's like the treble is cranked and I can't adjust with an equalizer or something. Movies are fine, but again, no appreciable improvement over the 13", where I would watch DVDs frequently with great effect.

So...do I recommend it? Well...it depends. I don't recommend it if you're just a casual user, even if you like the larger screen. Go for the 13" and if you absolutely have to have screens of a larger size get an external. I just can't justify the $300 premium for a larger MacBook unless you are actually going to use it for gaming, audio/video, or VMs. Then it makes sense. As far as the high resolution 1680 screen, recommended only if you're gaming, really. I would like to emphasize DO NOT get the antiglare from Apple. It's nice looking, it really is. It will shock you; it will tempt you; it will compel you to fork over the extra $50. Don't do it; the quality of that screen is not as good as the glossy, because the antiglare is not the full glass. Get one of the Green Onions Supply Anti-Glare AG2 Screen Protector for 15-Inch Aluminum Unibody Apple MacBook Pro and do it yourself. You'll thank me later.

5-0 out of 5 stars Expensive, but worth it., April 25, 2010
The macbook worked right out of the box,set-up was easy.I had a pc laptop (whose company name I won't say) and had all sorts of problems (slow boot-up, and screen and registry problems) I got so fed up, I decided to get rid of it.
While looking at laptops at Best Buy store, I looked at the macbook pro "15.4" which just happened to have the new Core i5 processor. At first, I balked at the price, the more I "played" with it, the more I liked it (And this is from someone who has NEVER owned a mac of any kind) And while I plan to keep my pc desktop, the macbook has become a welcome addtion to my household.

5-0 out of 5 stars Coming from a Windows user, Macbook Pro is fantastic, June 8, 2010
I recently purchased the Macbook Pro 15" 2.4GHz i5 2010 edition to replace an aged 2006 Sony VAIO. I had previously owned a Macintosh around 15 years ago, so I had a working knowledge of what I was getting into. Above all, the Macbook Pro sold me on its unibody aluminum design, long-lasting battery life and a change from the Windows operating system. I have owned the Macbook Pro for about a month and it is truly one of the most fantastic computers I have owned (and I've owned many in past years, all Windows). I've broken down some aspects of the computer below:

    Construction & Design:
The Macbook Pro is a unibody design that is cut from a solid piece of aluminum. This means there are not any battery compartments, memory compartments or openings as you find on most laptops. While this means you cannot change the battery on the fly, the computer is solid and doesn't buckle (or feel like it may buckle). The aluminum also helps to keep the computer cool by rapidly dissipating heat across the entire body; in fact, the metal exterior can be cool to the touch despite running for hours.

    Display & Graphics:
There seems to be some debate over the glossy blacklight LED display of the Macbook Pro line, especially in terms of glare. There is a distinct reflection from the monitor if viewing something dark. Under normal conditions I did not find this to be an issue whatsoever, especially if you turn up the monitor brightness. The display does look fantastic and images have an extra "pop" as Apple spokespeople claim. Take a look at one in an Apple Store or Best Buy if you want to see it in person. As far as the high-resolution and matte upgrades, the average consumer won't gain much benefit versus a professional photographer, graphic designer or film editor.

    Trackpad & Keyboard:
The Macbook trackpad is phenomenal and is truly sets apart the Macbook line from PCs. The trackpad utilizes multi-touch allowing the user to scroll through pages using only two fingers. Swipe back and forth to quickly navigate webpages or pinch and pull to adjust text size or zoom functions. The trackpad itself is massive allowing for a great deal of hand movement compared to most laptops. Still, you'll probably want to invest in a regular mouse, especially if you are Windows inclined for right click features. The keyboard has backlighting which means the keys light up in dark conditions, but I find this to be more of a novelty feature that I never use. The keys have a soft plastic feel and they are easy to type on even for hours at a time.

    Power & Performance:
The battery life of the Macbook is unbelievable. Then again, I came from a laptop that could only hold two hours of battery life, this Macbook averages 8 to 9. Not quite the levels advertised, but far beyond what I need for a typical day. With the i5 chip, I find that everything is snappy and responsive. Startup takes less than 30 seconds. The only downside is the default hard drive installed, it runs at only 5400 RPM. This is noticeable to the point that the processor easily outperforms the hard drive to the point of creating a bottleneck. But there's always the option to upgrade the hard drive to 7200 RPM or an SSD.

    Cons:
Relatively slow hard drive compared to processor speed & price of the machine
Two USB ports placed very close to one another, one can be easily blocked and inaccessible

    Overall:
The Macbook Pro 2010 is a five star product. As a dominant Windows user, I found the OS to be highly intuitive and easy to use from the beginning. Even activating the Apple one year limited warranty was a breeze given most PC manufacturers. The only downside I see with the machine is the hard drive as I touched on above; it is a shame that such an expensive and well-built machine is limited by the speed of the HDD to the point that the user can notice the problem. Aside from this and the minor USB issue, the computer is a fantastic purchase that is well worth the extra dollars. If you're concerned about buying from Amazon or Apple directly, Amazon sells only the base units and only Apple can officially customize the machine. That said, the base unit is more than enough for most users and only a few will seek 8GB of RAM, high-resolution matte display or iWork pre-installed. If you're in search of a laptop, the Macbook Pro is a great option.

    5-0 out of 5 stars MacBook Pro 15 - Comprehensive Review, July 20, 2010
Have been using computers for nearly two decades and have owned both PCs and Macs. Use a PC laptop for work, which is great for that. But this is my first Mac laptop and I have to say, while I was grumbling at the price, you get what you pay for. Here are my thoughts.

    PROS -

Trackpad --- this may be the best thing about this computer. While I read the review on CNET and they said the trackpad is great, you really have to experience it to understand. It is a transformational way of communicating with the computer. After having the computer for about a week, I am already much faster on this trackpad than I ever was on a mouse. You have to experience this to understand. The size and the functionality built into the trackpad are nothing short of astonishing.

Included software --- the included software on iLife is really useful. It has a rather full featured movie editing software for free, as well as iPhoto, iTunes, etc.

Not included bloatware --- it is nice not to have to delete all that crap from the desktop and windows system.

Fast --- very fast, especially in OSX. We got this with zero options, just the base 15" model. It is very quick with anything you throw at it.

Build quality --- you can grab this laptop from any corner and carry it. There is no flex in the casing. You can really feel the difference that building these things out of a solid block of aluminum makes.

Looks --- this is really a beautiful machine. You'll be as happy looking at is when it is off as when it is on.

Lighted keyboard --- bright enough to see, but not too bright to be distracting. Excellent view of all the keys in any lighting.

Display --- we have the base display and it is crystal clear. My brother-in-law got the resolution upgrade, and while you can tell a difference, if you don't have both the computers next to each other, you won't know what you are missing. If you do intensive graphics work, I would recommend the display resolution upgrade, otherwise, it is just bragging rights, for which I don't need to pay extra.

Battery life --- basically it goes all day with light use on one charge. There are not too many 15" laptops, if any, that can do this.

Spyware and Viruses --- yes there are none now, and that is good. Hopeuflly, there will be none for a long time.

Discounts and Rebates --- while most people would not associate discounts and rebates with Apple, this is a pretty good time to buy a new Mac. We got $200 towards an iPod Touch (making it free) and $100 towards a wireless printer (making it free). Thus, in the end, we got a wireless printer and an iPod Touch for the cost of the tax on these products alone. Also, if you are a teacher or work for the government, Apple will knock another $100 off the price. These are some nice discounts when you buy this laptop.

    NEUTRAL -

OSX --- about two years ago, this would have been a tremendous positive as Vista was an unmitigated disaster. However, with Windows 7 being pretty good (and shamelessly ripping off many of OSX's features), this is less of an advantage than it sued to be. It is really a matter of taste. We happen to like OSX, especially Snow Leopard, but others may like Windows. This computer can run both.

Only two USB ports --- this is at least USB port less than the competition in this price range. However, because the track pad is so good, I don't need to fill up a USB port with a mouse like all my friends do. Also, since a wireless printer is about $100 (which Apple gives you towards the price of a new printer), that frees up another USB port. Thus, I only need a USB port for the iPod or the camera. Neither of which is connected to the laptop at all times,

Only 4GB RAM --- while it is plenty for now, I can see this not being enough in a few years.

No user replaceable RAM --- RAM is the cheapest way to make your computer go faster. Hopefully the computer will still go fast after the warranty expires so that I can take this apart and add more RAM. But it is annoying that there is no easy way to replace the RAM.

No user replaceable battery --- I don't know how long the battery will last, but if a problem develops, it would be nice to be able to change the battery.

    CONS -

No Blu-Ray --- this was the biggest drawback for me, as I would have liked to have a Blu-Ray player in the house. However, since I don't own any Blu-Rays, it is not that big of a drawback. Also, since you can download most movies these days, this missing player is not a deal breaker.

No HDMI output --- this is another potential problem. I don't have an HDTV, so this is not a big deal, but if I get one, it is annoying to have to buy a special adapter PLUS an HDMI cable to play video from my laptop's mini-display port on my TV.

    CONCLUSION -

All in all, I've liked this machine alot more than I thought I would. It feels good in the hand and great when using. The display is terrific and the machine is quite responsive. While it is tempting to look at a computer based exclusively on specifications, if you only do that, you may lose sight of what you need in a computer and how you use it. All the specifications in thw world achieve nothing if they are for features that you don't use. This computer hits a nice combination of features that people will actually use without including features and complications that they won't. For what we need, it just works.

While we looked at many laptops, we are happy we ended up with this one.

Hopefully this review helped you in your computer shopping. Best of luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even better than I'd hoped, May 16, 2010
As a long time PC user, I'd been wanting a Mac for a good while. The last time I bought a lap-top I came very close, but went with HP in a last minute burst of frugality. That frugality was short lived, the HP didn't make to its third birthday, and once again I was lusting for a Macbook. This time I went for it. I've only had the computer for a few days, so probably no genius insights and a lot of my initial observations have been said before, but I'll proceed anyway. First, and most obvious, straight out of the box it's...pretty. I mean seriously this is one darned nice looking piece of technology--nothing clunky here. Okay, like others have said, straight out of the box, it was easy to set up and worked like a charm. Because I have no Mac experience I figured I'd be on the phone with Applecare pretty quick, but the only assistance I needed was from my Internet service provider, to remind me what my wireless password is. After that I was good to go. Shocking! Not a single other glitch. As far as learning curve from Windows to Mac, it's going fairly well. Key board shortcuts are fairly intuitive--command instead of control, Finder instead of "My Computer" (I think that's right). The screen and back lighting are amazing. BTW: I have had to call Apple support and they've been very helpful, and reasonably pleasant. Also, so far, I haven't spoken to anyone in Asia.

The only negatives I've noticed, is that there's an awful lot of real estate between the edge of the computer and the key board. I'm sure there's some ergonomic plus to this; but, for me, it's just annoying. Course, I may just need a lower typing surface (dining room table is supposedly for eating? Who knew?) Also, for the cost of the computer I wish a mouse had been included, even an inexpensive usb connected one. Still, Best Buy opened at nine, and the magic mouse was on sale, so not so bad.

5-0 out of 5 stars Done with windows, May 16, 2010
I had a four month old HP 18" with 8GB RAM, rocking video card, running Windows 7... and the fricken thing just about drove me crazy. It would crash (!) while playing FARMVILLE (!!) The fingerprint reader only worked when it felt like it and when it didn't it was almost impossible to input your password because the cursor would MOVE while you were typing!!!! I have never had a worse laptop, and when I had the opportunity to painlessly get rid of it, I did and bought this sweet little machine. I purchased mine at our local Apple Store, though I would usually buy on Amazon, mostly because I wanted to be sure to get the options I wanted like matte screen. I am sitting in a sunroom right now typing this and there is no reflection at all on the screen.

The real reason I am writing this review is that nobody mentions the trackpad. It really makes the whole machine for me. Click anywhere. Right click by using two fingers, scroll or track left and right with those same two fingers. Swipe with four fingers to expose the desktop, or display all open windows. I have always used a mouse with my laptops, but this trackpad is BETTER than a mouse. you can zoom in and out, rotate your photos, whatever! The only time I need a mouse is for serious gaming. And now that Steam is up and running for Mac, I can do that too...

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Fast!, May 15, 2010
I purchased the MacBookPro 13 inch Intel Core Duo last year. It has been a good laptop overall, but since we use lots of applications and multiple user profiles, it was really slow. I decided to upgrade to the new 15 inch Intel i5. This laptop is SO fast. Immediately, we could tell the difference on Skype: the image was at least twice as clear, no skipping and the sound quality is like the other person is in the next room. The form factor is nice: not so large, but lots more screen space than the 13 inch. Battery life is great, as good as the 13 inch if not better. If you just need the basics: Word, Excel, Mail, Browsing, Skype, this is the laptop for you. If you are serious gamer or have other special requirements, you might want to opt for the faster 15 inch or the 17 inch.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you live outside Continental US do NOT buy Apple Mac, September 9, 2010
MacBook computers, including the MacBook Pro, on which i am writing this review, are known for frequent manufacturing problems - hard drive, keyboard and mousepad.
While it is a great computer, if it breaks down on you, and you live outside of North America, it will be a nightmare getting it fixed!
I have a new MacBook Pro 15 bought through Amazon. I am currently Moscow, Russia, where there are numerous Apple Stores. The mousepad stopped working about two weeks ago in Bali, Indonesia. The shop told us to not even think about getting it fixed there - it would take at least a month. Back in Moscow we took it for repair, and the same problem the shop said - no problem, you are covered by warrantee, but it will take between 7 days and 6 months to get the replacement Apple MacBook MC516LL/A 13.3-Inch LaptopApple MacBook Pro MC374LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptoppart - and we cannot tell you how long, not even approximately.
Apparently, they keep no spares locally, and have to order them from abroad. We have desperately checked every shop, and they all tell us the same thing. "Don't worry" we will fix it for free - hopefully in 2010. I am back on my old Toshiba which can be repaired in 24 hours, anywhere. Think about it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dream Machine, November 9, 2010
I've gone through more Apple computers--desktop, laptop, Power Macbooks, iBooks, iPads--since 1990 than I care to count. Out of all of them my favorite was easily the previous Macbook Air (the flash memory model). Forget about the specs. Once you get your hands on one of these, the specs on paper mean nothing. Suddenly every other Mac product seems clunky, overly hot and heavy. The Air is the only model I want to use, and actually do use--day after day. And in no time at all I discover how little use I actually make of a built-in CD/DVD drive or an extra USB port. (Granted, there are times you'll want to insert or burn a disc. I've had better success with $40 non-Apple external drives--currently, a Samsung--than with the Superdrive that Apple makes available for the Air at twice that price. Discs have a tendency to get stuck, and Apple leaves you no provision for mechanically ejecting a jammed disc.) As for a single USB port, a seven-buck 4-port Belkin hub solved that occasional limitation in an instant, though that may no longer be necessary since Apple has provided 2 USB ports, one on each side (the 11" model lacks the 13" model's SD card slot, which makes sense since those preferring the smaller model are less likely to be attracted to it for video/audio storage and editing).

The only product I was awaiting from Apple was a quality "netbook," so what did they do? They produced the wildly popular iPad, which I barely use at all (for the grandkids' visit is about it). Why, I thought to myself, couldn't Apple at least include a keyboard with it and put a cover on it? Well, they did--and they have delivered in spades with this most recent MacBook Air. If you want all of the features of a conventional Macbook minus the weight, look at the 13", slightly more expensive, model. If you want the lightest, most practical machine available (for a writer--not a film editor or audio engineer), stick to the 11.6" model--and be sure to ignore the specs that suggest the common entry-level Macbook is faster, more powerful, etc. When it comes to the "unmeasurable" qualities, the immense satisfaction of writing with a full-sized keyboard on a featherweight machine, the Air is in a league of its own. (I tried a couple of non-Apple "netbooks" and sent them back because they felt like plastic toys made for munchkins.)

The one thing I didn't like about the previous Air--and it cost me in time and money--was the ill-conceived design of the hinges attaching the two halves of the machine. If you knicked one, the entire mechanism began a slow process of erosion, eventually affecting the entire internal circuitry of the machine and leading to repair costs practically equal to the price of the new Airs (the original flash drive models cost over 2 G's). Thank goodness Apple has re-designed the hinge mechanism, making it possible to open the cover some extra inches and without fear of damage to the hinge, the machine, or the user's wallet.

Battery life on the previous model was noticeably limited, especially to someone like me who likes to run a bright screen. The extended battery life of the new Airs (again, the 13" model's is "more" extended) makes it practical to leave the AC adapter at home--maybe for the entire day. Also, speed and graphics resolution, which I thought could not be improved upon, are better than the first model, both seemingly as good as it can possibly get. (Admittedly, the extra time is due, at least in part, to my not using an Air for storing photos, audio and video files and messing with gizmos like "Face Time.") The onboard sound is 50% better, with greater frequency range and authentic stereo sound rather than a single tiny speaker.

The concessions Apple has made for an improved Air are almost too insignificant to be worth mentioning. The machine no longer has the curved edges, which required a cute little trap door that you flipped open in order to connect a USB item, external audio device, or video display. Also, the keyboard itself no longer has backlighting, which was marginally useful at best (since the light could not shine through opaque keys).

Since I've made a couple of references to advantages of the 13" model, I'd better insert here that, as lightweight as it is, it still feels like a tank compared to the 11.6" model. Or to put it another way, the 13" Air is to the 11.6" Air what a conventional Macbook is to the Macbook Air. If I needed a 13" Air, I could probably still live with the first model if the price were right. The excitement, the break-through, the most desirable model, it seems obvious to me, lies with the new 11.6" Air, which is even priced lower than its bigger brother.

Finally, configuration and price. Even with the educational discount from Apple Store, Amazon's is overall the better deal. I probably would be happy with the Mac Air's most basic, least expensive configuration (which brings the machine in at under a G-note). For some reason, Amazon has chosen not to offer through Prime the several different configurations available for this model, but it makes sense that most users are likely to order the pictured version with 128 gigs of memory rather than the standard 64-gig model. Because of my last bad experience with breaking an Air hinge (and, even before that, the previous Air that I received from Amazon arrived DOA) I know I "should" order the warranty. But if Americans did that for every item they purchased, we'd all be in deeper hock than is already the case. Besides, as a second release of what was formerly a new model, the Mac Air has by now had time to work out the bugs. If not, I've never had any problems returning a defective product purchased from Amazon.

They say that the time of the "Netbook" has come and gone. Maybe so, but that's just quibbling about names. I predict the current "iPad" and computer tablet craze will turn out to be the real fad. (You can watch videos on a TV, for Pete's sake, and as clever as some of the thousands of "apps" are, unless you're a committed, 24/7, life-time gamer, they soon lose their allure not to mention actual "use" value.) The Mac Air, which was so maligned upon its first appearance, is one of the most useful, well thought-out, carefully designed and assembled products Apple has come to market with. It's here to stay--and for good reason. Don't wait for Steve Jobs to convince you that you need one, as was pretty much the case with the iPad. This is one machine that makes its own case, and if you've read this far, you probably deserve to have it under your fingers the sooner the better.

[2nd thought re: the Apple warranty. There's no getting around the fact that the Macbook Air is more about convenience than savings. In fact, the necessity of having Apple replace a worn-out battery (it'll happen sooner or later) may be sufficient reason to purchase the warranty (Apple gives you a time-frame for doing so, should you have ordered the machine without the warranty.)]

I just got my MacBook Air 11" on the second day it was launched, although I was not aware Amazon carries the same product, I went to Apple Store to purchase mine.

First of all, the 2nd generation Air is as slim as the previous one, and with the addition of new 11" model, it takes the slimness to next level. You will be stunned by just looking at its profile in person.

Secondly, the biggest differences you will notice at once are the screen is very crisp, even at the 11" model I bought, it can view significant size of the web pages and documents with no problem at all; also it got two USB slots, thanks Apple, they finally get it right; 13" weights as identical as the previous one, but 11" is less about half pound, not that much on the paper but you will immediately notice it when you actually hold it yourself.

Thirdly, speed of processor, to be honest and frank, since I have been using two generations of Macbook Pro, I was initially worried about the actual speed of the 1.4GHz of Intel chip. But after few days of using it, I have to admit it feels much faster than the old Macbook with 2.16GHz processor. I can open tons of web pages, iLife '11 and Office applications without any problem. Latest OSX Snow Leopard definitely helps a lot. But I doubt if anyone will use it for heavy processing work, i.e. video editing, music composing or lots of calculation, I don't think you shall get this one as your main computer though.

Fourthly, the SSD storage, since there are no moving parts, the laptop is very silent and cool, the reading of documents is fast, but not noticeable except using testing software. But booting up and waking up time are significant faster than the Hard-drive models.

Last but not the least, the battery lasts just what apple promises, with wifi on, surfing web, watching youtude, listening music and doing some Words editing can give you about 4 hours life. Consider the size of the laptop, it is more than just OK. Of course everyone is greedy, if you need longer battery life, go for 13". And to me personally, although the Macbook Pro 13" can last about 2 hours longer when doing the same tasks (with screen set at really low bright), I still feel more satisfied with Air 11" performance than the Macbook Pro 13", as Macbook Pro never gave me 10 hours as Apple claims.

In conclusion, the Second Generation of Macbook Air is not an overpriced Netbook for the hype, it is a true slim yet powerful laptop that you can actually carry with ease for daily work and entertainment without sacrifice too much for the speed. Steve Jobs once again stuns the market with this renovated master-piece, and with very attractive pricing. For this highly competitive pricing, the other slim laptop manufactures are going to have a tough time.

Be aware, DELL, ACER, TOSHIBA and SONY, APPLE is coming with an ultimate weapon at hand. Get ready, It is going to be a very tough fight!!!

FINAL WORD: GO FOR IT IF YOU CAN, YOU WILL BE A HAPPY MAN/WOMAN WITH THIS BABE IN YOUR HAND!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing computer!, October 24, 2010
I just picked up this nifty piece of equipment today at a local big box store. I've read as many reviews as I could get my hands on and I will probably recap many of the same points.

Context: I got this computer as a second device, mainly to work with Pages 'O9 documents and PDF files. I am writing a dissertation and plan on using this computer as the primary vehicle in my writing. I will use my other computer to store my music, family photos and videos.

AESTHETICS & BUILD- This is a beautiful computer, elegant in lines, and also stunning to the touch. All the surfaces feel smooth and solid. The screen is very crisp, more than my macbook i think, and offers what appears to be a very small resolution. You can really pack a lot on to this smaller screen. Using the computer on hard surface feels very stable, there is wiggling or rocking.

SPEED - The computer feels surprisingly snappy for the rather low-end processor speed. From what I gather, the solid state drive enhances the speed of the processor to provide a rather smooth experience. I've been testing that a bit, and, I had pages open, a video running in Hulu, and everything went well. If I could have, I would have went with the 4 gb memory instead of the two. This computer isn't going to set any speed records, but it is fine for the average user i think.

BATTERY - I will update this when i have more information after using it.

SPEAKERS - The speakers are only so-so, about the same as other macs. And, something that i found annoying is that the speakers are sort of implanted under the keyboard. If you want to listen to music while typing up a word document, you feel vibrations from the music coming though. the simple thing is just to plug in a pair of headphones.

REMOTE FEATURE - the Air has this feature that allows you to wireless connect to and run a drive on another computer in your wireless network, or, also tranfer files. I think this is going to come in very handy. But admittedly, I have yet to see what will happen. I have connected my own generic optical drive today to install Iwork 09 and worked fine. Although the thing looks like a beast compared to this little laptop.

MULTITIOUCH PAD - I have an older macbook and hadn't experienced the new features of this trackpad. I was thinking that I might have use up one of the two USB ports on an external mouse. Now, I am considering leaving the mouse at home! This little trackpad packs a lot of effective multitouch features enabling easy scrolling, zooming in an out on webpages, and other moves I have yet to learn. Very sweet.

LACK OF COMPUTER LOCK - Most full size laptops come equipped with a little hole to attach a security lock to make sure no one swipes your computer when you are the library or coffee shop. The Air does not have one. I am disappointed with that. But, as small as this thing is, and as fast as it boots up and wakes from sleep, I could probably just bring it with me whenever I leave the table.

Overall, this computer is going to have some trade offs, as many reviews across the web have noted. You are trading: built in optical drive, large storage capacity, and speed for a highly-mobile, enjoyable to use computer, then I think you will be very satisfied. This thing is WAY better than your average netbook and only a little less functional than the macbook or macbook pro. I would stress though that 128 gb of a hard drive is what i have and I would not go smaller than that. Great computer.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Very Fast Computer !, October 25, 2010
I've been dying to get my hands on this 11 inch Macbook Air. I got to the store and waited less than a minute and I was using it. First thing I wanted to find out was if this was really like an actual laptop versus one of those slow Netbooks that I listen to peeps complain about. To my surprise this computer flies. I was really pleasantly surprised at the speed it moves at. So my next question was just how fast does the apps like Word come up. Boy was it quick. No slower than my computer at home. I was using the 1.4Ghz model running only 2GB RAM. The solid state drive was the 128GB model. Apple is going to sell a lot of these to people who want a super light laptop that has a bigger screen than your typical notebook and runs really quickly. So to put this thing to it's paces I downloaded Google Earth. The Apple store's connection was running at about 12 to 14Mbps yet it downloaded very fast. Installation was ridiculous quick and the next thing I knew I was flying across the globe and viewing my Panaramio pics that I had posted on Google Earth. The only thing that didn't happen was the pics giving the preview view, but hey I don't even get that on my i7 computer right away so who cares! The world spun and rotated while going from country to country and city to city as if I was on my computer at home. Amazing thin machine. The body is ultra-thin and the quality top notch like all of Apple's Unibody Aluminum machines. I totally can see myself running around with this beautiful laptop that weighs only 11 more ounces than the iPad. I have carried around an iPad with me all day and it is not heavy at all so another 11 ounces should be nothing. The new trackpad is wayyy nice. You will love it and I never even realized I didn't miss the mouse until later when I thought about it. No need for the rat anymore so those two USB ports that come with it are open for perhaps an SD card reader. The perfect machine to take with me so I can load my digital photos and view them on the nearly 12 inch screen ! (11.8 inches to be exact!) Another feature I will love is that you can plug in your Headset with mic and remote and talk on it using Skype and also play music while surfing. Very, very nice. This is just an initial review. After getting one I will be back to give more details.

    4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Second Mac, November 28, 2010
I have a somewhat interesting take on the 11.6-inch MacBook Air. I chose the 13-inch model for myself, but my father who is always on the go for business, chose this 11.6-inch model. He wanted the extra portability, and I wanted the extra performance of the larger machine.

In the end, the story took a further twist. I sold the 13, and I now have this 11.6inch model as shown by Verified Amazon Purchase.

Visually, the machines look different. My (original) 13-inch model does not look significantly different from the front or rear compared to a full featured MacBook Pro. In other words, on the 13-inch model, which I still think is a fantastic choice for many, the footprint of the device is basically the same as a 13-inch MacBook Pro. The difference is the slim side profile, and the two missing pounds.

This 11-inch model is not only light and thin, but has a smaller footprint too. It is striking to see. It looks small, and it's gorgeous. My original 13 was light, but took up as much desk space or lap space as a 13-inch Pro essentially.

The drawbacks to this model and the reason I originally chose the 13-inch? The processor included in this 11-inch machine is a fair bit slower. Comparing some online benchmarks, this entry-level 11-inch model with the 1.4 GHZ Core 2 Duo brought in about 70 percent of the processing speed of the entry level 13-inch model. While other parts of the machine are equally as fast, such as the graphics processor, solid state storage, and memory, the processor performance difference is not insignificant. You do feel a slight performance difference between the 13 and 11.

The included storage on this model is 128 GB. Being a second Mac, I could have gotten by with the 64GB machine, but I got a good price on the machine here at Amazon, and I figure the extra storage will bump my resale value up someday, when the next revision is available. Still, you will have to be careful to not story lots of videos on here, of course, story a handful of movies for a trip is no problem. You main video library can simply remain on another Mac, and you can stream it over to Air via iTunes.

However, the storage is solid state and fast, which enables fast startups and allows the machine to still feel snappy despite the slower processor.

Apple specs the battery in this model at 5 hours, whereas the 13-inch model has a quoted 7 hours. Apple is using a new battery testing procedure, which is said to more accurately predict real world battery life. Nevertheless, the battery life edge does go to the 13-inch model. I find the Apple battery projections not awful, but I get about 1 hour less than the quoted on each machine, and I have relatively non intensive tasks I use the Airs to complete.

The display is no slouch despite its 11.6-inch size. Indeed, its resolution is similar to the Mac Book Pro's 13-inch display, so there is no question that the display is gorgeous.

iLife 11 is included and already installed on this device, so you will be able to take advantage of the latest iLife software right out of the box. Two USB ports and a mini display port allow for expandability and compatibility with external devices. Connect an external hard drive for expanded storage, or sync up your iPhone. No problem. Indeed, believe it or not, this small 11.6-inch MacBook Air can drive the 27-inch Cinema Display that Apple sells. That shows the impressive graphics performance this small machine offers.

The 13-inch asks you to take fewer sacrifices in terms of performance and storage. However, this 11.6-inch is oh so portable. Honestly, it's surprising when you see it in person. This 11.6-inch is probably destined to be the "cool," choice.

Overall, it is clear to see there are several drawbacks to the 11-inch model. Less storage, shorter battery life, and slower processor. However, there are several benefits: a smaller footprint, lighter weight, and therefore easier portability. Plus, there a cool factor that makes jaws drop when you pull this 11-inch model out of your bag. Despite its diminutive size, it's a quality product. Make no mistake about it, while it might be less powerful than other Mac notebooks, the 11-inch Air is no net-book. The quality and performance far outshines any net-book. This machine will serve your word processing, consumer photo editing, music listening, email writing, and web surfing needs without issue. I might caution its use as one's sole computer only due to the limited onboard storage, limited RAM, and somewhat slower performance (1.4 GHZ Core 2 Duo Processor). Highly recommend product for the correct application/use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Apple MacBook Air 11 inch, November 10, 2010
This is my first Mac. I've been waiting a long time for an Apple computer that I can carry around all day in a small bag without my shoulder getting a cramp. I found such a bag from Tumi that was rated for devices only 11 inches wide, but since the Mac is so thin I was able to squeeze it in, and thus it makes for a very small and compact package.

My review is going to be quite different from others, so I hope the info here is useful to some people. I've used every version of iPod since circa 2005, and also the iPad since it came out in early 2010. I find the iPad to be much easier to use and more convenient for casual chores like email, Web browsing, and picture viewing. The Mac on the other hand has the decided advantage for serious editing, uploading and downloading of files from the Web, and other applications that require a computer-like operating system that the iPad lacks.

Again on the other hand, the touch screen of the iPad is much easier to use and more convenient than the touchpad of the Mac, so it remains to be seen which device I will use the most. I use a desktop PC for my software development job, and have owned many laptop PC's since they first came out in 1984. The MacBook Air is easily the best laptop type of computer I've ever used.

The MacBook Air doesn't have a spinning hard drive, so you don't have to worry about shocks to the drive that could damage it like with most laptops. I felt that 64gb of storage was not sufficient since the Mac makes a lot of temporary files, and can accumulate a lot of "trash" files before you remember to go delete them. Even 128gb may not be enough for some people, so if you think you might be crowding that 128gb of space, you could get the larger MacBook Air with 256gb of storage, or get used to cleaning up temporary files really often. The Mac also works well with external USB drives, so if you don't need to carry all of your files around on the Mac at all times, you may find that one of the USB pocket-size hard drives that range from 500gb to 1000gb will satisfy any storage issues.

The power supply that comes with the MacBook Air is fragile according to the majority of reviews I've read at the Apple Store on-line, so I would recommend being very careful handling that item. I keep the screen at maximum brightness, and still get a few hours of battery life from the Mac. Charging time is very short, about two hours if the battery is very low on charge.

The MacBook Air is beautiful to look at and handle, has a very nice high-resolution screen with good color, has the right weight and proportions, and if you're looking for a real computer that's a pleasure to carry around, it's the best bet in my opinion.

Addendum: Today one of my new 64gb USB drives would not allow me to write to one of the folders I created, and after trying everything possible on various Windows PC's, also with help from the USB drive mfr., I plugged the USB drive into the Mac and removed the folder. After doing that and plugging the drive back into the desktop PC, I saw that the drive now had 4gb of bad sectors. The important thing is that Windows would not fix the problem, but the Mac did, although the 4gb of space was lost permanently. For many years I kept a Windows 98 computer handy to fix bad photo files that users could not fix on their Windows XP systems. It's good to know that the Mac still has some of that capability that Windows lost.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best truly portable computer. Get it., December 6, 2010
Bottom line: If you are looking for an ultraportable computer, get this one. Worth every penny and then some.

The 2010 MacBook Air gets serious about the ultraportable concepts introduced in the first MBA. The most important change is the 11.6" screen, representing just about the smallest possible form-factor without compromise to the keyboard. The screen is also right at the sweet spot, with a true 16:9 resolution and more pixels than the old 13" screens. I generally find it to be equally viewable as my desktop's 20", and bright enough even at 1/2 brightness for most circumstances.

This computer is anything but a netbook. Don't call it a netbook. The MBA is a full computer that just happens to be ultra portable.

The size and thinness really is all it's cracked up to be. At 2.2 pounds, it's lighter than most netbooks and actually lighter than any of the actual books I carry. It's thinner than most paperback books. It takes up less space in my backpack than the printout of my course outlines. In fact, its overall volume is actually smaller than that of the floppy drive in my first computer, and I owned at least one cell phone that was heavier. When I take breaks from class, I usually hide it underneath a textbook, and you can't tell it's there.

Battery life is great and consistently exceeds my Macbook although not as good as some of the new Pros. I frequently get through six hours of actual work between charges, keeping Bluetooth turned off and brightness around 50%.

I moved to my MBA from my aluminum Macbook, which has since become my desktop computer. I have installed Office 2008 and 2011, which actually run better on the Air than on the more powerful Macbook, due to the fast SSD. It really is faster than other laptops in several ways. When resuming from suspend by opening the cover, it is ready very quickly, including reconnecting to wireless. Booting from shutdown is incredibly fast, usually 4x faster than my other Mac. Opening files is fairly quick, although MS Office itself is a very slow program no matter what hardware you run it on. iPhoto is surprisingly snappy, but limited by hard drive size. The only areas where I've noticed a performance issue are in very processor-intensive tasks like video conversion, although on those tasks it still outperformed my high-end 2006 model. This machine is not built to be a powerhouse, but it holds its own very well, especially when compared against similarly sized units., many of which have single core chips.

Remote Disc works well, but not as well as I'd like. I recommend using it to copy the disk onto a local file, rather than actually running even an installer program off the remote disk. If optical discs are a frequent need, invest the $79 in the external drive. It works very well, and still keeps the overall weight well below that of a "regular" laptop.

Basically the performance of this laptop is fairly impressive despite not setting any records. It shines in portability, and is more than adequate in most other areas.

Some strange weaknesses versus some other Macs:
    -no backlit keyboard
    -no ambient light sensor
-no sudden motion sensor (not needed because no HDD, but still fun in third party software)

On the whole, this really is one of the best laptops that Apple or anyone else has ever made. Get one.

5-0 out of 5 stars For frequent flyers or iPad Killer, December 4, 2010
Each person has their own requirements for a computer.
Mine were portability: light weights and small. I want to be able to bring this on a day trip, overnight trip and not think about the weight or what bag I am going to bring.
I don't do any kind of video, photo, 3D, graphics editing.
For when I need to do serious work on spreadsheets that require multiple open simultaneously, I use an iMac.
I use external hard drives to keep extra data and photos.
For basic word processing, email, surfing, powerpoint, skyping etc The MacBook Air 11" works perfectly well.
This is a real iPad Killer - (almost*) all of the benefits of the iPad and none of the disadvantages

    Cons:
    -audio is not very loud
-only two USB ports and a video out

After 2 weeks with the Air, I don't miss my MB Pro 13" at all, the screen size is not an issue for me, and I love the size, for people on the go - it's perfect (except photographers, designers, people with butlers and chauffeurs, etc)

PS I purchase a Colcasac as a sleeve, it's great.

    * no touch screen, no 3G

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly worth the premium, December 1, 2010
I just recently converted into Macs. I have an iMac at home for the family but I have yet to find a small portable from Apple. Before Apple had only the 13 inch models which is a bit too big for my bag so I decided stick with an 11 inch HP netbook. Now Apple released the 11.6 Air I was the first in line to snap up the entry model. The price is basically double then your average netbook but for double the price you also get twice the performance. One problem I had with my HP netbook is the loong time for it to load programs especially MS office programs. When working with huge documents like Word and Excel, the netbook tends to get sluggish and unresponsive at times. Not so with my new 11.6 Air. Office 2011 for Mac loads fast and I don't experience any slow down when working with huge Word and Excel files. In fact the Air seems much snappier then most computers I've worked with before - perhaps this is because of the SSD storage? Although the battery is rated for only 5 hours, I was pleasantly surprised that I was able stretch the battery life up to 7 hours if I turn off my wifi (which I don't need when I go into long document editing seasons). Finally, one of the best thing I love about the Air is the full size keyboard and the higher quality screen which although does not adds to its performance but makes the Air very comfortable to work with compared to other small size notebooks. Two thumbs up.

5-0 out of 5 stars more than satisfied, October 30, 2010
Got this from Amazon. saved about $150 since I didn't have to pay the 9.75% tax and $25 recycling fee from Best Buy so highly recommend from Amazon.
I won't say anything the other people have said but I can tell you my experiences. I own the 2010 macbook pro 13" and the 2010 version i3 27" imac (yes, i know, i have too many computers!) but after seeing this at Best Buy I thought this was one of the most amazing computers I've ever seen. As small as it is, it's nothing like those $300-$500 netbooks. It is FAST. I believe the flash memory is the reason for this. Put this next to mly 1204N 12" Asus Eee, it is extremely thin. The screen is BRIGHTER than that Asus, and the Asus is so chunky next to this.
I can also tell you I use about 80% brightness and the battery is still at 60% after 2 1/2 hours of web browsing and Slingplayering. So I'm sure the 5 hour battery claim is accurate and it might be even more. Extremely good battery considering it is so thin.
The laptop does not get hot, just warm, although I haven't done any video editing or photo editing. The keyboard is not lit, which is a bummer but the screen is close enough to light up the white letter on the black keys.
I am extremely satisfied, even at the very high price but this is a real apple mac computer, not a netbook. I won't be buying another computer for at least a few years as these are MORE than satisfying. Hope this helped. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very impressive laptop for the price!, October 29, 2010
I'm a somewhat advanced computer user and had been looking at laptops for a while before buying the Acer AS5742Z-4685. I dug into all of the specs of about 6 different models and zeroed in on this one as the best value. The price point was above the $300 I spent on our 'family' laptop a year ago, but I'm glad I spent the extra $100 (check out some of the private sellers' prices).

Pros: Crystal-clear LED screen, fast computing, great multi-tasking, not too much crap-ware pre-installed, lightweight, and easy-to-use keyboard

Cons: Battery life is good, but not great; price point is a bit high if you're willing to wait for Black Friday or Gold Box deals... which I obviously wasn't)

Overall, this laptop is a good buy in the $500 range, a great value at the $400 level, and--if it ever goes on sale in the $300 to 350 range--don't miss your chance to buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast CPU + Beautiful Display + Low Price, November 21, 2010
This is an amazing laptop. Screen is crystal clear and very bright. The top cover and spots where your wrist sit have a nice texture to them making fingerprints and smudges hard to see. The p6100 is a great budget processor. This beats down the similar price athlon II mobile processors and seems to be ahead of the old core 2's in benchmarks. The Battery life seems to be about 3.2hours while browsing the net and working with outlook and word. Keys have a great feel and the way it is designed, you really cant get food or other small objects caught under them. This laptop does have 3 usb, 1 on the left and 2 on the right.

    Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Laptop, great price, December 10, 2010
Bought this laptop for about $450, free expedited shipping from Warehouse Sur+ (Amazon seller). Arrived late due to FedEx, not the fault of Amazon, Warehouse Sur+ or Acer, of course. It was double boxed for shipping, arrived in excellent condition.

Excellent finish which makes smudges hard to see. Screen is nice and big, crystal clear. We have 4 Acer monitors and all work very well. Not a single issue with them and two are several years old, so we were pretty sure Acer would make a good laptop as well.

The laptop comes with Windows 7 Home Premium but no DVD for it so you can't reinstall easily. The key code for it is on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop, so if you get an OEM Windows 7 DVD that key should work to reinstall Windows 7. It also comes with some craplets, but you might be interested in McAfee's antivirus (we weren't, we use Microsofts Security Essentials, free download from MS with an authenticated Windows system).

We reformatted the hard drive into multiple partitions and installed Windows 7 64bit Ultimate (we use BitLocker drive data encryption for data on the laptop and on the USB drives). The reformat and reinstall worked just fine (and no craplets!). Since there is no disk with the system, there were a lot of missing drivers (for the network card, wireless device, several Intel drivers, the camera, etc). All were easy to find at the Acer web site (get them beforehand, unless you have another computer to download with).

Once we added the network driver, we could instantly see the local network computers and printers, and internet. Once that was found, we went to Microsoft Updates and that seemed to find most the other drivers for updating, including the video card drivers. The Acer website for the AS5742Z lists drivers for both AMD video cards and nVidia, although you probably don't want or need both, and they are large files. The Microsoft Update website detected and installed the appropriate video driver, which makes life a lot easier.

If you decide you want to install Windows XP (we tried just to check if it works) it does run fine, although we did have to go into the BIOS at bootup and change the SATA setting to IDE. The default value crashes XP during installation. That's a minor issue, since Windows 7 is so much better anyway. If you use the normal 32 bit XP, you won't use all of the 4GB of ram; you need the 64 bit operating systems to do that, which is why Acer provides the Windows 7 64 bit version.

The laptop has 3 USB ports, two on the right side, one on the left. We put USB thumbnail drives into them all to test them and had no issues. We tried the wireless network, it was fine. We also connected to our 10/100/1000 wired network, and the laptop transferred a large file at the full 1Gbps speed. We then tried a wireless modem from Verizon, and it also worked as expected.

The keyboard is very nice for a laptop. The mouse pad on the laptop is ok, but we prefer a normal mouse. We put in a USB mouse made by Roswell (a cheapo one for $4) and it worked right away. The 4GB of RAM were fully accessible, thanks to the 64 bit operating system (both on the OEM version it came with and our own Win7 64 Ultimate).

The only thing we will get for it is a car charger. We have a standard laptop briefcase, it fits into that fine.

Overall, we are delighted with this laptop and expect to buy another one in a few months.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!, December 14, 2010
I bought the HP G62-340US last week but returned it when I saw this Acer Aspire with 1 more GB of RAM for only $20 more at an office superstore. I am a typical home user who uses the laptop primarily for photos, web browsing, some word processing and filing taxes. Wow, I am impressed by this laptop. I especially love the number key pad on the right hand side. That's a luxury that I never had with any of my previous laptops. The keyboard is also very nice with full-size keys that did not require too much force to register. Unlike other reviewers, I did not have any ergonomic issues with the off-center touchpad. Installed Internet Explorer worked seamlessly. I was also able to download Google Chrome as an alternative web browser. So far, no complaints with this value-priced Acer Aspire.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good laptop, November 27, 2010
I am satisfied with the price. All features are good enough to me. Crystal clear screen, fast computation, HD built-in camera, light weight, thin size and multi-input touch-pad. I am not so sure its durabilty. I hope it lasts for long time.

    2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected - a returned item, December 16, 2010
After reading the good reviews and deciding the price point was reasonable, I ordered this computer from Amazon and shipped through Pro-Lenses as suggested by Amazon. It arrived two days later but when I opened the outer box, imagine my surprise to find another shipping box inside complete with a label to another customer that had shipped to them 10 days earlier. The box had a spot where you could clearly see another label had been torn off as well as some residual tape that had been cut off. One of the seals on the box had been cut open. This was NOT a new computer and most likely a returned unit. I called for a return authorization immediately. Who knows the history of this item... a return or a refurb or even if it had been dropped prior to return. I am going to order a different unit and definately from a different supplier.

I don't blame Amazon but the original provider Pro-Lenses.
