Zach knows Joanna is too young for him, but he has never felt like this about anybody before. She’s so sweet and passionate and flirty and free, and the most beautiful girl Zach has ever known.

Joanna is swept away by her feelings for Zach as they grow increasingly passionate with each other. She’s doing things she’d never normally do, but it’s like God has whispered in her heart Zach is the one for her.

The powerful forces of young love, sex and religion come crashing together in this romantic, sexually charged story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Christian porn for teens?
    Make that ZERO stars.
A bizarre, unrealistic story of two teenagers, Zach and Joanna, who over the course of her 2 week family vacation from Colorado, manage to fall madly in lust/love. Intertwined throughout all of their self-inflicted sexual temptations is their desperate struggle to please "god". But at last we see their "patience" pay off as they promise Joanna's father to wait until Joanna is 17 to fulfill their commitment to "god" and go all the way. It's the least they could do after "he" came through with the prayed-for-a-few-times scholarship to the prestigious art school a mere 5 blocks from Joanna's house. Now THAT'S a miracle! I'm sure they'll be happily married forever and ever.....(yes, that was sarcasm.)

    I hated this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars unfair reviews?
Before this book was free it received nearly all positive reviews. Obviously it has gained a lot more exposure since then, but the title and cover picture must have given a lot of people the wrong impression of what kind of book this is, and a lot of people must have downloaded it expecting an adult romance or erotica and not noticed it's in the teen/YA category. Most of the positive reviews come from teens who loved the book, while all the negative reviews are from adult women. Many of them speak of it as being juvenile and unrealistic, but the book has a romantic-teen-fantasy feel to it, especially the ending, and most adult romance novels are not realistic either (they're just aimed at a women's fantasies rather than a teens). The ending would be very romantic to a younger teenager, but to adults who have a more jaded outlook it might not be so romantic, and might even be offensive.

There are quite a few religious conversations in this book, and I can understand some people being offended by that and not wanting religion mixed into their entertainment. But I think the religious views in this book are unique and add something to the story. It is not a standard religious message or indoctrination, and it takes an honest hard look at the church through the eyes of its main character. The teenage years are a time of questioning and figuring out what the truth is and what you believe and what is important. This is a real part of "coming of age", but not something you find very often in teen novels. Perhaps its realism is too much for some people. I can also understand some people not liking the realism and sensuality between a nearly 16 year old and an 18 year old. There is a lot in this story that could offend people.

I think most of the harsh reviews are from people who were personally offended by this book. Many of the reviews give away the ending and deliberately misrepresent the story. They don't just give their opinion, they express it as if it is the opinion everyone should share. I think people should try reading it for themselves and form their own opinions, especially since it is free to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars an amazing love story
I do not understand how come this book get so many harsh review... I think it was captivating. Great love story of 2 teens struggling to stay pure and holy for God.

Today's view is so deformed so a story like that may seem unrealistic but it is very real or at least should be.

    Great read!

    5-0 out of 5 stars ...
Some people that reviewed this novel didn't like it. It's directed at YA, but a mature YA. I'm 15 and I really liked it, keeping in mind that it is fiction.

5-0 out of 5 stars good read
I think this story was great and it shows pressure teens may face but turned back to GOD

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing debut novel!
This is one hot young adult story, but it is also very realistic (for a Christian teen) and well-written. The author includes God and faith in the mix, thus complicating things further when feelings get strong and the pull of young love becomes blinding. I really hurt for this guy. Seriously. I felt his pain as well as hers while they struggled with their budding relationship. I could not stop reading this book. It's the kind of story where you want to crawl inside and talk to the characters to make sure they don't do something they'll regret because they keep putting themselves in tempting situations. I totally remember being the same age as the characters in this book. I identified with the faulty thinking that came with their burgeoning hormones. This author has talent! ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars Teen Angst ?, March 13, 2000
At the ripe age of 23, I borrowed my 18 year old brother's copy of this book and was enthralled.I cant help but wonder what a difference this book would have made in my life if I had read it at age 14 and not ten years later. The layout of the book is fun and appeals to readers of any age. This makes it easier to read. One thing I have to say, is that this book is one of the most powerful positive thinking books on the market. Although it's aimed at teens, the values and tips can apply to anyone. I loved the little excercises which are still applicable. Sean's frankness on matters really inspired me. My favourite part of the book though is the real life stories he relates on how teenagers have overcome difficulties and still succeed in the end. A great read, highly recommended !

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended, February 14, 2002
I keep having to buy copies of this book because I give them away to people I want to share the book with.

I found this book (at the age of 40-something) a little more reader friendly than Stephen Covey's book. I tell the teens I work with that Covey, Sr's book is a little more executive oriented and I had trouble connecting with it. This is easier to connect with and I don't find it preachy because Sean Covey so often tells stories on himself.

It's easy to peruse over and over again and to integrate little by little into your life. At least when my time management fails, I can name what I could have done better (put the big rocks in first). When I've spent the day dithering time away at some no-where project, I know I'm spending too much time in Q4. Little by little, it helps improve your life.

I guess I want to comment on the reviewer who thought Sean was trying to encourage reader to always be thinking of something nice to say (ie always kissing up to people). I don't feel Sean was trying to tell you not to be yourself, but well-placed, positive comments can sew wonderful seeds of cooperation and friendship. Externalize your positive thoughts by sharing them with people; it makes a difference.

Great book for teens, young adults and adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Adults Too--Forget His Father's Book, October 1, 2000
What Sean has done here hopefully has taught his father a lesson or two about simplicity. I don't think "how to" books have to be so complicated and Sean Covey proves it with this wonderful book. It has the exact same message as Stephen Covey's book but is a lot more fun and relaxing to read. I recommend that all adults buy it instead of Stephen Covey's book, "7 Habits of Highly Effective People". Stephen Covey's wordy, proud and know it all writing style really got on my nerves. Sean's book on the other hand is humble, straight forward, simple, easy and fast to read. You get the point without having to read through a bunch of mental masturbation. I bought it for my teenage daughter and then ended up reading the whole book and buying another copy for another teenager. They both really liked it. My husband is a crisis counselor who works with teens. He has been using the ideas in Sean Covey's book for his "Rites of Passage" work with teens and has really gotten some great insights and practical tools for his workshops. I wish there were more books like this on the market. If your teen is resistent to reading the book then read it yourself. You'll find that it will still be helpful when guiding them or talking to them about the immense stress and issues facing them in today's highly chaotic society.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love it or hate it... the choice is yours, October 16, 2005
After reading through the reviews on this website and others on different websites I've come to this conclusion- either people think that it was (1)a fantastic book which distilled sound advice and changed their lives for the better [5 stars] or, (2)a bunch of cliched, useless material exhorting teens to be mama's boy/ teacher's pet/ goody-two-shoes/ (name your case)[1 star]. If there are people out there who haven't read the book and are getting confused by all the conflicting, contradictory messages up on the web, I honestly don't blame them. Who wouldn't be?

I've read the book and all I can say is that the book does not deliver miracles from heaven that can brilliantly transform your life and make it oh-so-fabulous. It didn't promise that either, by the way.

What it does is to offer tried-and-tested, reliable advice, the kind that your mother or teacher would have given you. Call it rehashed common sense, but the cartoons and quotes make it easier to digest and not-so-painful to internalise. Yes it's naggy, yes it's authoritarian, yes it's condescending at some parts... I don't doubt that. The thing is that in the end, it's still well-intentioned, useful advice. It's perfectly okay to just pick out one chapter, or one quote etc. that means something to you and ditch the rest. Really. Or if you really think that none of it can help you in your life, then take it as a few hours of harmless entertainment, forget about the book and get on with your life. Case closed.

As for those who haven't read the book yet, give it a chance. You might just be able to pick up one or two things here and there which, when put into practice, may just make your life that little bit more sane and less messed-up. Best of luck to you.

    3-0 out of 5 stars 7 Habits of Highly Effective Pre-Teens, January 8, 2006
I read this book in 7th grade at the age of 12, and I loved it. I thought it was very well-written and witty.
Now, as a 19 year old, I recently finished rereading this book just because I found it as I was cleaning out my bookshelf, and I have to say...it's not bad, but it's not that good. I think, perhaps, as the author was aiming for a lower age bracket, he accidentally aimed a little too low.
    Here's my breakdown:

    Pros:
    - Book is much shorter than the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People yet still conveys the same ideas.
    - The writing style is pretty straightforward.
    - It offers a lot of examples from teens and a lot of illustrations.

    Cons:
    - Book becomes more and more condescending as it goes on.
    - At some points, there are just too many examples, and many are rather impersonal--they don't offer the kind of detail that would make a reader actually care. Some of the examples even contradict the Habits.
    - A lot of the illustrations are kind of lame (I remember thinking this back at the age of 12, as well). The charts are fine, but most of the cartoons on the side just aren't funny.
    - The information in the book is all very intuitive.

I think I will read the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People to see how I feel about it. As for the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, I have to say...
    1) Do not force a teen to read a self-help book. I've seen that in most of the negative comments, people were forced to read this book for a class in school. I think doing so even goes against the Habits. If you genuinely care about someone's problems, maybe read through the Habits yourself and practice them. Then, you might be able to get your little friend to play along. This book is not that inspiring, and anyone who is forced to read it will easily find a thousand things ridiculous about it.
    2) Although the book's subject matter is intuitive, I agree that it is nice to be reminded of the right way to live your life and how to reach an "effective" life.
    3) However...because of the book's pseudo-spunky and somewhat condescending style, I see it gaining more acceptance among people right on the brink of teenagedom than actual teens. Pre-teens will probably get more of a kick out of reading a book for teens, and they may not notice the condescending writing since society has yet to tell them that they deserve to be treated as adults. There are points where Covey talks about eating disorders and suicide, but, as far as I can remember, middle schoolers have already been well introduced to these topics.

    Conclusion:
This is not a good book for the people it was meant to help, but it would be a very good book for a slightly younger age group. That way, you have a better chance of getting through to them before the pressures start to pile on.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very interesting, and lifechanging book, April 23, 2001
I have personally read this book, and ( as a 13 year old), it has drasticly changed my life. There are passages in this book that told me things about myself I never knew. Like this " I'f who I am, is what I have, and what I have is lost, who am I ?" I no longer feal that money or impotance should matter in my life. I should live it accourding to my life, and not by the will of others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book!, August 17, 2000
This book is wonderful! If you have the perfect life you need not read it, but if you're life is far from perfect read on! The 7 Habits help you improve your life and help you succeed! It gives great tips and it's fun to read. Sean Covey makes you want to read more and there are sections where he encourages you to write in the book. I'm really glad I bought this book. You will be happy too. The funny cartoons and relaxed style of writing is so great. I let my friends borrow this book and they loved it too! It's a great buy for any teen from 12 to 19.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the very best guidence book in the world, December 12, 1999
With this book I don't know where to begin, everytime I feel my life not going in the direction I should be going or when I feel my self getting off track I just pick up this book and it gets me straight again. I love to read different self help books and motavational books, and I would have to say this is the easiest to read. This book contains many cool pictures and side quotes that make it clearer to understand. It starts with the chapter get into the habit and the quote for the chapter really sums things up when it says "We first make our habits then our habits make us." The next chapter is paradigms and principles. This chapter talks about the philosophy, "what you see is what you get". Another great chapter is begin with the end in mind which says it best when said "you need to have the blueprints before you build the house." The best parts of the book I feel is when it talks about making deposits in your personal bank account and to always think win-win in any situation. I would recomend this book to anyone and everyone that actually cares about what path in there future to take.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved me from a Bad path, March 24, 2008
I come from a horrible background, my family has no moral structure, they're either on drugs or selling drugs.

My freshmen year of high school was really hard for me, my moms drug use escalated and I felt trapped. I was about to give up and go towards the bad stuff my family did/does. I just wanted to be accepted, I was too weird for the normal kids, but not hardcore enough the kids that let me hang with them.

I had no support, and I felt like I couldn't reach out, after a suicide attempt, I was put into a leadership class and the Curriculum was the Seven habits of highly effective teens

    This book helped me:
Over come my family (I moved out when I was 16)
Get better grades (I went from a 1.6-3.8 in one year and graduated with a 2.5)
It helped strengthen my moral goals (and give me some also)
and It helped me take care of myself

I am now 19 a freshmen in college and working towards becoming an abnormal Child Psychologist.

A few good teachers and this book saved me from a life of crime and drugs.

I feel like there are a lot kids out there that need this book, and a few good teachers.

P.s. I still have my copy from my freshmen year, all beat up and highlighted and I re-read it every so often to remind myself of all the awesome stuff in there.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is it...a must read!, March 11, 2002
We all know what the meaning of teenage means. Late-night parties, cheating on tests, and sneaking into movie theatres. It's a golden age in our life when we can just wild out and simply have fun! I have to admit the person I am now, is quite a different character from what I was before I read the book, "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens". A bit like a mentor who taught me to see the light, I've learned to appreciate so much more in life. The book really reaches out and touches each person individually, and helps them find the best in themselves. Sean Covey has created 7 "habits" to help teenagers make the most out of their teenage life. Illustrated with funny cartoons, easy to read fonts, and simple language, not once was I ever bored when I read the book. Speakin from the heart, Covey brings back memories of his own personal past and shows us how we can change things before they actually happen. For example, he spends a chapter talking about the importance of being a good friend. After reading that chapter, I tried using some of the tips he mentioned into my real life senerio. And guess what? It really works! I've learned to become a much better listener, a better advice giver, and better at keeping secrets. All that was deprived from one chapter. I was just surprised to find out that a lot of the things he said related directly to me, therefore it made it really personal. If Covey was able to make a personal connection with me, I'm sure he can do so with everyone else. I speak as a teen to a teen; read it. This'll be the most memorable peice of writing you'll remember throughout your teenage career. ... Read more

Having recently emerged from the tumultuous teenage years herself, Amanda Ford saw the need for a guide to help girls learn to listen to their inner voices and think for themselves. Inspired by such popular books as Simple Abundance and The Woman's Book of Courage, her book offers support to young women as they navigate one of the most confusing and challenging times of their lives. As anyone familiar with teenagers knows, there is nothing they hate more than being told what to do or how to think by "out of touch" adults. Here's the real scoop from one who knows the score. In 365 one-page essays, Ford offers stories, information, and advice on all the important issues facing young women today: boys, dating, drinking, self-esteem, fights with friends, dealing with parents, and more. Girls will find comfort, encouragement, and insight in these pages, along with suggestions for articulating and confiding their feelings, fears, and frustrations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Honest wisdom, great comfort, easy format, October 18, 2002
I am a family counselor and I recomend this book for my teenage clients and their parents. It is full of comfort. Like a big sister whose just been through all the trials of being a teenager herself, Amanda is able to offer a perspective that parents and other adults can't. The formate is helpful and user friendly. The reader can look up any topic in the contents and read one page or many on subjects ranging from boys, to peer pressure, to parents. This book encourages girls to listen to their own voice instead of following the crowd. It encourages each girl to make choices that satisfy themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Be True to Yourself : A Daily Guide for Teenage Girls, October 15, 2000
Be True to Yourself : A Daily Guide for Teenage Girls, is a treasure. It is an important and powerful book; a book that every teenage girl should read. Amanda Ford's writing style is simple, honest and very real. You know she is speaking from her heart and from her own experiences. This is a book with integrity. It is one that the reader can open to any page and find inspiration and guidance. Like Sarah Ban Breathnach's "Simple Abundance," Be True to Yourself has a daily message. The book will never become outdated and it can be read day after day. Each page is like a precious gem that shines on its own. There is no gift you can give that will help a girl more during her teenage years than Be True to Yourself. It will become her best friend and companion.

This wonderful book offers 366 (yes, it accounts for leap years) daily tips for living the best life you can. Offers sound advice for handling boys, jobs, peer pressure, self confidence, having fun, parents, jealousy, manners, dreams, and any of hundreds of issues that pop up daily for the average teen. This book inspires you to act in your own best interests and make the most out of life.

This book includes a detailed index for looking up whatever topics concern you, as well as a list of other helpful books and websites. How cool is that?

5-0 out of 5 stars Big hit with my daughter!, February 23, 2006
I bought this for my 13-year-old. Even though the reviews were very positive, I worried about how successful of a gift it would be as my daughter is a no-nonsense girl who does not like fluff or mushiness. But she loves it! She reads it faithfully every day, and it's been a great conversation starter as she tells me about the "lesson" of the day. For her, it's just the right mixture of straight-forward talk and sensitivity without being to childish.

4-0 out of 5 stars Who would have thought you could find a guide to life?, March 9, 2007
I love the day-by-day style this book is written in, and the simple, page-long answers help so much with the complicated questions a girl can have at this time in her life. I personally have made it a habit to read the day's advice on my way out the door to school, and it's really helped me to improve my outlook on life. It's also nice because it gives advice on some akward topics that a girl can be embarassed to discuss with her parents. The only downside is that some of the advice is pretty obvious, and simply common sense. Overall though, I highly recommend it to any confused teenage girl like myself. =)

5-0 out of 5 stars A book to be treasured forever, August 8, 2008
Being a teenager in today's world is difficult, but with this book it makes our lives a bit more bearable. Teenage girls are bombarded with "perfect body" images all over the media, which creates a warped body image, and are pressured to have a boyfriend and receive good grades. Be True To Yourself has a worthy piece of advice for every day of the year. It includes party ideas, advice on school, parents, popularity, and boys, self-esteem boosters, perspective on life, and reassurance that everything will turn out right in the end. Amanda Ford's witty writing went straight to my heart, and at the final page of this book I felt like I knew her personally. This book's helpful hand helped me through many tough times, and I recommend for every teenage girl to read it also.

5-0 out of 5 stars book for teenage girls, September 12, 2009

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Message in Interesting Format!, January 16, 2008
I purchased this book as a gift for a special teen in my life and she really loves the daily format. And the messages are empowering and very positive for her as she moves through this special time of her life!

    5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!, September 16, 2000
I haven't even bought this book yet but I can't wait until I do. I found it at a local bookstore because it was on a display table and the colorful cover caught my attention. So I picked it up and I love what's inside. Amanda Ford is a really good writer plus her tips and 'meditation' are really thought-provoking and fun! I hope she writes more and recommend this book to all teenage girls!

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read good advices!, December 27, 2009
This book includes short and valuable message for young girls. The easy, flowing style and the short pointed messages attract the attention of our girls, who don't have the patience to read through long articles and complicated messages. I was harsh judging Ms. Ford's new book because I was comparing it to the book that she co-wrote with her mom: "between mother and daughter". However; given Amanda's young age, the content of her messages, and the likable style absolutely redeemed this work in my eyes. ... Read more

I immediately put my other presents away and started reading. It was sad, heart warming, and happy at certain times.I realized how special I really am. It was amazing how other people around and over my age felt. Also very nice to see how girls feel and want in a man. Also, how no matter how hard times get, suicide is never the answer. There was two stories in particular I loved Sparky (in the section "On Learning)you will never believe the ending. Another on of my favorites is about suicide and how everybody deserves a friend it is Always Return Your Phone Calls (in the section "Tough Stuff") It is sad, beatiful, and very inspirational. I suggest this book to every kid my age this book is so good I am going to read it over and over again. Thank-you.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Touching and Inspiring book I've ever read!, May 18, 2000
When I first heard about Chicken Soup For The Teenage Soul, I was not in a hurry to purchase or even read it. Later though, my freind bought it and I read a story he told me too. WOW! That one page of what he went through totally changed my perspective on life. I went home and bought the book that night. When I began to read it I relized what I had read was just the beginning of a renewal on the way that I treat and look at my life. Day after day I read a few stories at a time. There were stories that caused my to laugh, cry, smile, frown, get scared, think, and love. If there were more stars beside just 5, I would give them to this book. I feel like this book has renewed so many things in my life that I believe i am a different person. I also have learned many lessons about family, life, freinds, and many many other things. I would recomend this book to anyone that needs a little hope, inspiration, renewal, or just a nice read. Thank yo for your time and if you read Chicken Soup for the Teenage soul I hope that you enjoy, wait, I know that you will enjoy every story in there. Thank You!

When i sat down to read chicken soup for the teenage soul i gfigured it would be something written for younger teenagers. Myself being a 19yr old college student i didnt think i would like it. Well let me tell you i was tottaly wrong. Within the first half hour of reading this book i determined it was perfect for me. I got to the point where i could not put this book down. The stories of the heart submitted by other readers touched my heart. Whether it was reading about young love or friendship wvery story related to my life in some way. This book was a gift from my mother when I was younger going through my rough times in life. At first I thought that it was a stupid gift and and didn't read it. But one day sitting around board I thought I should take a look after that there was no way to get me to put it down. What really attracted me to it was the very first part was about love, and me being in a new relationship I profited a lot from it. Besides this book teaching us about love it also talks about life and our growing world. It shows us that life isn't always perfect. No matter what you've just been through either a death or a broken relationship, someone has already been there and they got through it and so will you in time. If there was any book I would recomend this would be one of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this one!, December 13, 1999
Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul is a outstanding book! The book is about real life stories; stories about real life, love, friends, family, and tough stuff. This book really touched my heart. There is a story in the book called "I'll Be Looking for You Ace". It is about a girl anf her brother is in a car accident. When he is in the hospital she wrote a letter sayiny "I wish could have been the one in the accident." So if you want to know if he dies or not, then read "Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul!" I highlt recommend this bookto teh age group 12-18. This book is an outstanding book!

I got this book because one day in 7th grade, a girl started to read a poem during a nosiy classroom, everybody, includes the teacher, stopped what they were doing and glues their ears to her words! The poem was so powerful and meanful that it left us all speechless! Right when, I got home I ordered the book. Ever since I got it, it has always been there for me. Whenever I had a problem, I could just open it and fell better. The stories really made you think about what if that was you or I can't believe that is true. I would read and get done with a story and make everyone in the room read it because of how it made me feel. This book is very powerful and I think every teenager should get it!

Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul by Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, and Kimberly Kirberger.

Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul was an outstanding book. There are about 101 stories and, it was rated #1 from the New York Times. In the book there were several different topics. They were on relationships, friendships, families, love and kindness, learning, tough stuff, making a difference, and going for it! Having all these stories put into one book seems kind of weird, but if you think about it, they are all in there for a reason. All of the stories in this book deal with life, love, and learning. By reading this book you get the chance to hear about other teens' lives and what problems/ experiences they are going through. Each new story contains something new to learn. Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, and Kimberly Kirberger came together as a team and did a very nice job getting information on things that are going on with teens today. I think that all teens can relate to this book because they might have been through some of the problems/ experiences or maybe know people who have. It gives people a better understanding of kids' lives. After reading the stories in the book, you want to get up and go do something, if not for yourself, then for others. I enjoyed the book very much. I would recommend it to all teens out there!

This book is a good book. I think all teenagers should read this book beacause it is about the teenage life and it can help you out if your in the same situation as they are. What I really like about this book is the chapter called Tough Stuff. I liked that chapter because it was about teenagers being suicidal and dying at a young age and that just got me interested. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Girls Life Application Bible NLT IS Awesome!!!!, March 20, 2007
My twelve year old and I picked out this bible after we did some joint research and it is great. The graphics are just her size, not too childish and the bible asks questions like,"Did you get that girlfriend, God loves you." It interacts with guided bible studies in the back and I am looking forward to me and her doing some of those together. I also like that it is a hard back version which allows her to take it to school and not get it bent up like a paper back. I love this book and I am getting ready to get the boys version for my six year old, it is never to early to teach directly from the bible especially with tools as great as these.

5-0 out of 5 stars PRETTY in PINK-FRUITFUL in HEARTS!, April 7, 2008
We bought this as an Easter gift for our 7 year old daughter and she loves reading it, as well as it's beautiful pink cover that is wonderfully made and textured. I really enjoy this Bible as well!
The teaching throughout is extremely helpful in helping us connect to each other and to God. The stories and teaching help her APPLY God's Word to her life, and gives us an opportunity to talk about how she's feeling and what she's personally going through-then, allowing her to see it through God's eyes; helping her to make decisions pleasing to God in the "smaller things" in life-preparing her for a life-time of applying His Word to her life and making godly decisions about all things, great and small!
For memory verses I sometimes prefer other versions, but for praying, Bible reading and teaching, I really LOVE the New Living Translation-it really makes God's Word easily understandable using todays language, especially for kids.
I almost always use this translation for Praying God's Word-I used it in my "Alphabet Prayers" book and have received a great response from Moms, Grandmas and girls using them! For older Christians using this translation, it gives a deeper meaning, or newer explaination (I love digging deeper into a verse by comparing Bible versions) and for new Christians it's translated to this new generation with current language.
There are some things a bit more applicable for older girls, we'll just save those for later. Over-all this is a very wonderful Bible for girls of all ages-with timeless principles, relevant stories, and adaptable to many ages. I am very glad that we got her this Bible-and believe that she'll use and keep this one for years to come! It is ALREADY BEARING FRUIT IN HER HEART & MINE!

I got this bible for my [...] daughter for Christmas. She really likes it and we enjoy reading the side stories at night and talking about them. Some of the scenarios in this bible might be a little too mature for a preteen though. I would recommend this more for 14 and up.

3-0 out of 5 stars Age level on Amazon incorrect, February 13, 2009
This Bible is for ages 11 and up, and addresses teenage issues in life. It is not an appropriate Bible for younger girls, as the Amazon age range is described 8-12. This is a review based upon Amazon's error, not the qualities of the book.

    4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome, October 21, 2008
I think the "Girls Life Application Study Bible" is just awesome. I'm 18, but I think it's great for pre-teens and young adults, maybe even adults. The New Living Translation is very easy to read, but it still has enough eleoquence like the King James Version.

The add-ons are really good, especially the sections like "Is It OK?" and "I Survived!" because they help give answers to tough questions that face teens, and do so in a Christian manner, with hope.

The "Amazing Facts" section is interesting, too, and able to entice the reader to read the verse to which the fact is referring to.

And it's a very pretty book, so it's good all around :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Bible, October 24, 2008
I have a teenage daughter, I teach Sunday School, and I teach youth group at my church. I have purchased several copies of this Bible, and the girls seem to like it. They really enjoy the sidebar stories that deal with problems they can relate to. I plan to purchase more copies in the future. It makes an excellent gift Bible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Start for Daily Devotions, April 3, 2010
I received a copy of this Bible through the Tyndale Blog Network for review purposes.

The first thing I noticed was the attractive packaging and bible cover. Done in a deep purple, inlaid with a butterfly of different colors, and complimented with flowery pages, it is visually appealing and will grab the attention of teen girls looking for a Bible. Simply stated: It is a cool looking Bible.

The content is just as impressive. Although I am not completely sold on the New Living Translation, I find it easier reading for teen girls who are attempting to get into daily Bible reading. In addition to the books of the Bible, this Application Bible has several different elements that teen girls will find useful.

    "The Greatest Stories Reading Plan"
This is just as it states. A reading plan highlighting all the big stories of the Bible, from Creation to Life in the New City.

"God's Gift to You" highlights the need for salvation and how God made that possible.

"How to Read the Bible" helps a new reader figure out how to read the Bible by giving questions to ask with each reading.

"I Survived!" is stories of older teen girls who had difficult situations they had to get through. Titles include (but are not limited to) Alcohol, Approval from others, Authority, Beauty, Conflict with Friends, Laziness, Opposition, Peer pressure, Quitting, Rejection, Revenge, Serving God by Using Your Gifts, Worship that is True.

"Is it Ok?" give a reality check on what the Bible has to say about certain things. Some of the topics are: Anger at God, Cheating, Chores, Dating and Kissing, Goals, Gossip, Messiness, Occult, People who are Different, Popularity, Television, Weight Concerns, Worrying. Although, obviously, these sections are written with a human's opinion, the ones I read and checked out, applied Scripture correctly to each situation.

"At a Glance" highlights women of the Bible. This was the section I was disappointed in. Instead of giving facts about the woman it is highlighting, it gives a "first person perspective" as if the woman herself was writing it. Although it's probably a great exercise in getting teen girls to imagine what it would be like to be different characters in the Bible, I would have preferred it be more factual.

"What Now?" Scriptures to use to help make the right decisions in tough situations. Titles include: Accused!, Activity Overload, Earning Trust, final Exam, I'll Do it Myself, New Outfit, Party On! Passing Notes, Rules are Rules, Scared Silly, Sleepover, Speak up!, Take a Stand, Unjust Criticism, You've Got a Friend. This was my favorite section because it presents a situation, and then, instead of giving the answer, points towards some Scripture to read and asks the reader to make the choice based on the Scripture they read. This promotes application of Scripture which is an invaluable tool for a teen girl to have.

"I'm Not the Only One" is a series of most embarrassing moments that other girls share.

In addition to all that is mentioned above, there is also and Amazing Facts index, Memory Verse Index, Charts and Maps Index, and Where to Find it Index (for finding different topics in the Bible).

The Box states this Bible is for 11 and up. I find it a bit "old" for 11 year olds and would instead, recommend it for 15 and older. Other than that, it's a Bible that would make a great gift if one is looking to get a teen girl interested in the Word.

This latest offering in the best-selling Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul series explores a host of challenges faced by today's teens. Within its pages teens will find portraits of life's complexities expressed from the viewpoint of their peers. Teen contributors share their thoughts and feelings on difficult issues, ranging from poor self-image to thoughts of suicide, from family discord to coping with the loss, from peer pressure to school violence.

Teens ranked stress as one of their top concerns (along with child abuse and STDs). Oftentimes, the pressure can feel overwhelming, whether they involve worrying about an upcoming test, competition sports, family responsibilities, dating, or more extreme issues such as depression, suicide and school violence. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Moving and Emotional, December 15, 2001
My mom bought this book for my sister, and me. I took more of a liking to it. The book covers a variety of topics... from losing a family member... to standing up for yourself in a tough situation. The stories bring out so many emotions in you. You'll either end up laughing, crying, smiling. Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul is a great page-turned, and it's hard to put the book down. In each story you get wrapped up in the situation, and it's hard to keep your mind off of it. You get a sense of what the writer was feeling during their situation. This book is definitely moving and emotional. I also recommend "Open Your Mind, Open Your Life: A Little Book of Wisdom" by Taro Gold. Excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars A TERRIFIC BOOK FOR TEENS!, November 23, 2001
This book is really an extension of "Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul" except this one deals with "the really tough stuff." As a counsellor, this will be one book on my list that will be highly recommended to teens, particularly girls. It is not that the "tough stuff" mentioned here does not happen to boys but teenaged boys, generally speaking, are often more hesitant to put their thoughts in writing the way most teenaged girls will do.

Three topics are found in this book which are truly a sign of our modern times. The first is abuse, that thankfully is no longer a subject to be hidden in the closet. The second is teen depression and suicide, and the third deals with violence in schools. As a counsellor, I have seen first hand the havoc these problems can create. If you are a teen, you will realize that much of this "tough stuff" is univeral and you are not alone. It also helps if you are troubled by these issues, to discuss the topic(s) with a parent or trusted, responsible adult with whom you feel comfortable. Teens will be surprised that this is not a book which comes across as a voice of authority but, rather, one that speaks of compassionate understanding. It is highly recommended and, in my own opinion and based on feedback I have received from teens, the book is most deserving of a five-star rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing stories, October 18, 2001
I have read two of the other Chicken Soup books and enjoyed them very much. I have a teenager and when I saw this book I thought it would be good since we are all going through "tough times" right now. I sat down when I got home and decided to read a few of the stories and found mysled unable to stop. I cried for the girl who was made fun of and I cried for the students who expereinced such horror. But mostly I cried because I didn't have such a book to read when I was a teenager. I honestly beleive that if I had I would be a different person today. Each and every one of us needs this inspiration. Each one of us needs to remember our hearts and that we are all in this together. This book is a great tool for remembering.I suggest parents read it as well as their teens. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love the new Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul!, November 8, 2001
Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul on Tough Stuff was a book I feel all teenagers and for that matter adults should read. It really touched me. At times I cried, and at times I laughed. This book really touched home. It reminded me that no matter how bad my day was, there is someone that has gone through the same thing and maybe worse things that same day. I have all the Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul books and this is my favorite.

I hope others can recieve that same joy I recieved from it. This book like the others will serve as a devotional for me. Each story has some meaning or lesson that will touch home.

4-0 out of 5 stars More Soup Please!!!!!!, April 9, 2002
I have recently read this book and my first impression was that it was kinda...plain??? This book doesn't have much description, but the stories are ...Spectacular!!! I dont think that 13 year olds like me would benefit from this book, because it's a little...should I say...old?? Even though I enjoyed the book, the authors would lose a lot of readers by only making a Chicken Soup for the Teen's Soul and the Kid's Soul. If I could suggest one thing to the author, I would suggest to make a Preteen's Soul. Also, I would suggest to have more kids write stories instead of the stories always being by either Kimberly or Jack. It would draw more attention to the books if they didn't take kids for granted. If we don't like a book, WE'LL TELL YOU!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars teenagers going through hard times, January 27, 2005
The book I'm about to rate is Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul. I rate this book 5 stars. The reason why I rate it like that is because it's a very good book. It talks about teenagers going through hard times. If you read this book you can probably relate to it. The book is mostly about hard times in life that people go through. There are some stories that talk about loved ones dying and trying to get over the death. There are some love stories about teenagers and their problems with love. Some stories are heartbreaking and can make you cry. You know how some teens in school do drugs and they end up thinking they are smart enough to do it, it talks about it in the book. Some teens have parent abuse going on in their life and end up killing themselves cause of it. This book is also base on the fact that some teens can't defend themselves on any type of abuse. This is a book that helped past teens that had the same situation. Now today's teens need the help of this book to get them throuhout their lives. Some teens have problems with alcohol. And the other half of the teens have problems with their own best friends. On the back of this book they give you phone numbers and address to get the help they deserve.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book really touched me, June 2, 2003
I am a teen who recently read the book Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul on Tough Stuff. I loved this book. I give it a rating of 4 out of 5 stars. It made me feel like I was the person with the problems. It taught me, if you see someone going through something like suicide or depression, be a friend to that person and help he or she through their problem. Some stories made me cry, some made me say, "WOW, I didn't know how hard it was to go through these things." Some statements were funny. This book really gave me a sense of what goes on in the real world. This book touched all my emotions. I have four of the Chicken Soup for the Soul books and this one has touched my heart the most.

I really enjoyed reading this book being a teenager myself. It was very inspirational and touching. It is a good book for teenagers in any situation. I think it would be good for parents to read this book also because they could have a better understanding of what their teenager might be going through. This book talked about issues that are harder to talk about. It provides anonymous help lines for teenagers in need. The tops range from life to death. It is a very uplifting book for all.

5-0 out of 5 stars A conversation starter for mothers and daughters, March 23, 2000
When my daughter read the first paragraph (not Chapter 1, just whatever page fell open while I was driving down the street), she immediately said, "Oh, wow, this is good! Well, I had her read it to me and this led to a very interesting conversation that was enlightening for both of us -- for me because I found out what her thoughts were about how girls should act around boys -- for her because she realized that I really had been her age once upon a time and had had similar feelings.

I was pleasantly surprised that she thought it was just fine to share her opinions with boys and not be afraid of what they might think. She said she had hoped they would like and respect her for her opinion but many times that was not what happened and she was considering changing her ways. She thought she was doing it all wrong but the book was confirming her thoughts and she liked that a lot! This opened some good dialogue between us so I could share my feelings and experiences with her and let her know that I agreed with the book. Had it not been for this book, we may not have had that conversation for some time (or maybe not at all), and she may have decided to lean toward being more of a follower than the little leader she seems to be growing into.

An added plus is that, so far, I agree with everything I've read, and when I can say something and she can then read it in a book, that gives more credence to what I've said. Sometimes reading it in a book makes it more real than if a parent says it!

"To think and to be fully alive are the same," said sociologist and historian Hannah Arendt (1906 -1975). If that's the case, this book will make you become "fully alive." This quote is in the chapter titled "Thinking," which joins others on goals, creativity, love and romance, adversity, sports, and many more. All of the quotes are written by women. Most are not so deep that you can't figure them out; just profound enough for you to think or laugh. This book is a fun read. It's perfect to flip through before you go to sleep, or gulp most of it down in one sitting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wit and Wisdom Win Your Heart, October 25, 1999
    By A Customer
This review is from: The Girls' Book of Wisdom: Empowering, Inspirational Quotes from over 400 Fabulous Females (Paperback)
I picked up a copy of The Girls' Book of Wisdom for my eleven-year-old daughter at an author signing recently. I thought it had just the right look and feel: perky cover art with bright, girlish flowers, and a trio of preteens wearing a variety of expressions I'm relearning is the mood palette of adolescence: uncertainty, elation, challenge.

A tidy little size, too, I thought... just right for backpack, desk drawer, bedside table-anywhere she might tuck a treasure, if it made it to treasure status. It had possibilities. Cheery pen and ink drawings, a simple, open page layout that doesn't warn "This stuff is serious business!" And an overriding optimistic and comforting collection of quotes on subjects concerning girls: beauty, acceptance, mood swings, confidence, goals, dreaming...

I was right. My daughter delved right in. She even read aloud several quotes that made her laugh or sigh. Among my favorites, that I read aloud when it was my turn, were quotes of the women of my generation: Gloria Steinem ("Self esteem isn't everything; it's just that there's nothing without it."); Janis Joplin ("Don't compromise yourself. You're all you've got."); Susan Sarandon ("I believe strongly in my own personal magic.")...

We agree on Miss Piggy. She's very together ("Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and it may be necessary from time to time to give a stupid or misinformed beholder a black eye.").

And so The Girls' Book of Wisdom, with its slightly heavy title (But then I never would have bought The Girls' 365 Days of One-Liners-to-Live-By, or some such) has moved from my daughter's desk to bedside table these several weeks. We've each picked it up from time to time and said, "Hey, listen to this one..." Good book; good choice, I've thought, each time that happens. Makes for good conversation.

But it came to earn its name, The Girls' Book of Wisdom, last week. I've been reeling from a powerful personal loss in my adult life, one I would never expect a young adolescent to understand. My daughter has felt my upset and, being of a sympathetic nature, she's wanted to soothe me. Two nights ago in the middle of an explanation of why I should "cheer up," she told me, "Mom, listen, the more lost you are, the more you have to look forward to."

    "That's pretty wise," I said.

    "It's from the book, Mom."

"Yeah? Who said it," I asked her.

    "Calista Flockhart..."

And there you have what makes this a wise book: the keen editorial sensibilities of Catherine Dee, the creator, because it takes a wise collector to sift through the material of the ages and focus it at the hearts of young girls, tying together strands of advice and philosophy-contemporary and timeless-into a resource that communicates right there in their day-to-day language and lives.

Targeted for an audience of young girls from about 9-16, it's a book I highly recommend for ALL ages. We moms of young adolescents are just lucky! We're discovering it first!

5-0 out of 5 stars A motivating, empowering book for girls (and grownups too!), October 15, 1999
Dee's book is all about girl power! It includes quotes from women and girls that inspire and empower. The book speaks to grownups as much as it does girls. I'm 32 and got a copy for myself. Reading a page a day is a great way to get an extra burst of energy and "can do" attitude. For girls, these quotes will help build self-esteem and a strong, healthy sense of identity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Empowering Collection, May 31, 2005
Writing is how I process existence; it's how I make meaning out of my life. ~Ellen McLaughlin

Catherine Dee has created empowering collections of quotes in her "Girls' Book" series. Through quotes and short notes she explains why being positive is a tried and true strategy, why you should set goals and how solitude can increase creativity. She explains the importance of spirituality and how to add practical items like walking out in nature to your daily routine.

The entire book is really about balancing your life. You may find yourself inspired to start a journal. You may find out some interesting facts about Tyra Banks and her love of going to movies alone. I loved the quote by Renee Zellweger when she explains how much she loves to be out in nature.

You will also find quotes by Miss Piggy, Goldie Hawn, Sark, Calista Flockhart and Rebecca West. There are quotes by scientists, musicians, executives, writers, actors, athletes, doctors, Internet pioneers, world leaders, daughters and moms.

The quotes will help you to understand life, feel more confident and build good relationships.

It's an excellent book if you need something to boost you up if you're having a bad day or if you are just plain board. All the quotes are powerful words of wisdom from mothers, grandmothers, teenagers, actress', and girls! Buy this book! You won't be sorry!

I give the Girls' Book of Wisdom to the girls I visit as a volunteer at the local juvenile detention center. All girls like presents, and it's a great ice breaker. Later they tell me about favorite quotes, and, even better, about sharing their book with other girls and comparing quotes. I told the three girls I gave the book to so far that they could leave it at the detention center if they wanted when they left, but none would consider it -- the closest was one of them allowing another to borrow it overnight. I plan to continue taking copies to new girls I'm assigned. I intend to give one to each of my three teenage granddaughters for Christmas. I also enjoyed it myself at age 67!

    Editorial Review

    5th Anniversary - Updated & Expanded Edition
    With Foreword by FRANCIS CHAN

Ever Wonder What it Would Be Like to Live Homeless?

Mike Yankoski did more than just wonder. By his own choice, Mike's life went from upper-middle class plush to scum-of-the-earth repulsive overnight. With only a backpack, a sleeping bag and a guitar, Mike and his traveling companion, Sam, set out to experience life on the streets in six different cities—from Washington D.C. to San Diego— and they put themselves to the test.
For more than five months the pair experienced firsthand the extreme pains of hunger, the constant uncertainty and danger of living on the streets, exhaustion, depression, and social rejection—and all of this by their own choice. They wanted to find out if their faith was real, if they could actually be the Christians they said they were apart from the comforts they’d always known…to discover first hand what it means to be homeless in America.
Mike and Sam's story is gritty, challenging, and utterly captivating. What you encounter in these pages will radically alter how you see your world—and may even change your life.

This updated and expanded edition contains added stories, an interview with the author, a “five years after†bonus chapter, and a new foreword from Francis Chan

5-0 out of 5 stars "Be the Christian you say you are...", September 21, 2005
One day during a powerful sermon, Mike Yankoski had a paradigm shift as a believer in Christ. He decided that he needed to become the Christian that he claimed to be. That epiphany evolved into a daring plan: drop out of "normal" life and live for five months as a homeless person. After prayer and counsel, he found a kindred spirit named Sam Purvis to accompany him for safety's sake, and they did just that. Equal parts travel journal and faith chronicle, "Under the Overpass" is their fascinating story.

While most Christians (myself included) dream about the radical things they would *like* to do for God, Mike and Sam actually stepped out and did them. They traveled around the US to five different cities and spent about a month in each. They lived by their wits: panhandling, sleeping under bridges, eating discarded food, and getting to know the grungy homeless most of us dismiss as being lazy, addicts, crazy, or all three. They also experienced the best and worst of "regular" people, Christian or not - those who went out of their way to help, along with ones who taunted them or threw them out of coffee shops and churches.

An important aspect of this story is what it isn't: a fundie guilt-trip, ego boosting condescension, or boring theological treatise. Instead, it's a tale of simple and real faith in action. Mike and Sam had a humble desire to live out God's Word on the edge, and they fall back on Scripture verses and spiritual songs for succor or to reinforce a lesson learned. Of course, there were times of discouragement, conflict (with third parties and each other), and physical misery. But through these trials they achieved a deeper and more profound relationship with Christ, along with a genuine love for those who aren't so lovely or lovable.

The most fascinating part of "Under the Overpass" was Mike and Sam's positive and negative encounters with others, homeless or otherwise. It didn't take long for them to personify the external qualities we associate with street persons: dirty, smelly, and dressed in cast-off clothing. Once that transformation took hold, every interaction changed significantly. In addition to the usual rejections and confrontations, they received unexpected grace, often when at wit's end. For example, both were rudely thrown off a large Phoenix church campus after they were discovered sleeping on the lawn. Somewhat discouraged, they prayed and visited the church's service the next day in part to escape the oppressive heat. To their surprise, the man who had previously sent them packing tearfully asked their forgiveness and revealed that he was the director of the area's homeless outreach program! As for the homeless, they weren't depicted as "noble savages" or sad sacks with hearts of gold. Many were enslaved to substance abuse or mentally ill, and would often harass or intimidate others to get money for their fix. But some managed to help their fellows with food or companionship despite their own issues. And a few claimed to know God and love Him in the midst of their addictions and problems. Mike and Sam genuinely cared about these folks, and came to see them as equal bearers of God's image. Friendships were formed in each location, from the colorful "Sugar Man" in Portland, Oregon, to the talented but damaged Andrew in San Diego. And when people took time to help, or dealt with Mike and Sam as persons instead of skuzzy annoyances, the two men profoundly appreciated these demonstrations of agape love.

Both Mike and Sam's outlook on life and faith in God were radically altered by their unique experience. Based on Deuteronomy 8:7-11, at the journey's end they prayed that the change would stick and they would "never forget" God and His blessings. Each has returned to his previous life, but both brought along a heart for the homeless and disenfranchised.

Mike Yankoski has written one of the best Christian books I've read this year. It pricked my conscience to see men living out a genuine and radical faith vs. just being OK with the "easy grace" and material benefits I take for granted. There's also a website based on the book's title with additional information about Mike and Sam, an online forum, and resources pertaining to the homeless. I wholeheartedly recommend "Under the Overpass." Read it while listening to Switchfoot's "The Beautiful Letdown," and you may have an epiphany of your own.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Big, thought-jerking lessons, April 28, 2005
Clean, comfortable, and well fed? Have a cup of coffee and a couple of cookies to hand and ready to receive a nice little blessing? Well, think again. You are likely to choke on those cookies. No nice little blessings here, but rather some big, thought-jerking lessons leading to deep, maybe even uncomfortable, convictions.

Upper-middle class college students Mike and Sam answered God's call, purchased very used back packs and sleeping bags and, for several months, joined the ranks of the homeless. This adventure was not an easy decision. Receiving much advice from Christian mentors, making sure they had prayer backing, these two guys started in Denver and by the time they hit Washington, DC, they knew what kind of hunger makes you eat out of trash cans.

With a guitar and a modicum of talent, they sang gospel music on the streets to raise a little cash. Sometimes they ate 99 cent hamburgers. How long does it take for cement to become a comfortable bed? Where do you find washing and toilet facilities when businesses chase you from theirs? Just how dirty and smelly can a human become, and how fast? How do you handle sickness, injury, rampaging feelings? Which are more predominate, Christians and churches who ignore, chase, denigrate the grungy hopeless, or those who emulate their Lord by helping them? Are there Christians in dire need out there on the streets? What does it really mean to depend on the Lord for absolutely everything? Mike Yankoski knows the answers first hand.

Not a missionary, nor a theologian, although he keeps in the Word, he shares his experiences in absolute simplicity with gritty, deep truth, never shielding us from the smells, hurts, shocks, and fears. With ruthless honesty, Mike, and Sam through him, share their homeless victories, tragedies, and despair. He compares Pharisaical Christians and Christ-like followers. He presents the homeless people they met on the streets: drug addicts, drunkards, families, couples, dog-owners, Christians, pagans, old, young. We might think of them as scum. Mike and Sam learned to know them as people, fearing some, loving many, praying for them all. Under the Overpass provides many suggestions for working with these people.

Maybe God is calling you to do something that comfortable Christians consider unusual; Under the Overpass will encourage you immensely and help you set parameters for your adventure. Whether read individually, or for discussion in a group, middle school age through adults will gain through reading this book. - Donna Eggett, Christian Book Previews.com

5-0 out of 5 stars Changed my life, December 23, 2005
I heard Mr. Yankoski on a Christian Internet radio station talking about his street-living experiences and the subsequent book that followed and was fascinated from the first word. Not only is the book hard to put down (I read it in about a day and a half but without interruption, easily could have in less than a day), but having Mike's real-life experiences as the main story makes for a highly educational read. My opinion of the homeless was not exactly very "Christian" before I read the book but now I see their situation very differently. Mike offer's quite an eye-opener into the some-times hellish living conditions the homeless face and the fact that most of them are not content to be there but have no other options.

5-0 out of 5 stars Under the Overpass, August 25, 2005
I would like to respond to James Wallace. Perhaps you were disappointed in this book because you were looking for a point that the writer was not trying to make. This book is a snapshot of Mr. Yankoski's experiences. Everything I read or watch or do must be filtered through my experiences and spiritual life. With that in mind, this book knocked me back a few inches.

When I opened the book I expected it to be "preaching to the choir." For the last 32 years I have either been living by the gracious hand outs of others or I have worked in Food Pantries and Soup Kitchens.

I know what it is like to wonder how I will feed my child his next meal. I also know what it is like to cook at the Salvation Army on Sundays and load bags of food into trunks, carts, & backpacks on Mondays. But none of that knowledge is enough.

Caring for the needy in the small ways; touching the people the Jesus touched the lepers; NEVER letting someone see you flare your nostrils when you pass them; caring for one another as automatically as breathing....these are the things that God applied to my heart as I read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Challenging, Powerful Testimony, May 12, 2005
The choice made by the author, Mike Yankoski, to give up his safe and secure life really makes the reader think about life's priorities. Under the Overpass challenges the reader to examine their own daily lives and to live outside their comfort zone. The book is well written, and its first-person narratives help put the reader in the author's shoes. I really enjoyed learning about the lives of the homeless. It gives the words 'being content' a whole new meaning. I would highly recommend this book

    5-0 out of 5 stars Eye-opening Leap of Faith, September 30, 2005
Wow, what an eye-opening experience in humilty and faith in trusting God with everything. This book was excellent! I would love to buy a copy for every family member, friend, and youth in our church so that they too may try to "be the Christian they say they are."

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and challenging, November 10, 2006
This book will definitely challenge you. It's interesting to see whether you identify more with the street bums, the pious hypocrites passing by on the other side, or the authors. Although a few rough edges indicate the editing was rushed (minor spelling mistakes like "heroine" for "heroin", misuse of apostrophes) these do not distract from the overall thrust of the book. One wishes at times that the book had more of a unifying theme, or summing up of what was learned, or the author talked about how he changed in his outlook and behavior. But it's mostly a journal and odyssey.

3-0 out of 5 stars Has its flaws, but..., December 30, 2005
I just finished this book the other day and found it a convicting read. The fact that he had the courage to do this was enough for me, though it's far from perfect (he censors the conversations he has with people he meets, sometimes a message comes across that seems to say, 'if only people prayed more, they'd get what they need,' which I found simplistic).

He doesn't pretend that this wasn't a somewhat controlled endeavor. He tells of having contacts in each city, he 'eases in' by checking into a rehab center, they start with some emergency money in their packs, etc. I was reminded of Barbara Ehrenreich's 'Nickel and Dimed,' which made similar admissions before she got started with her project. One should read the book aware that this is not going to be a 'pure' account of homeless life, which he readily admits anyway.

Nevertheless, some of the stories he includes are incredible (churches that wouldn't give them the time of day, getting kicked out of a cafe because 'he wasn't a paying customer' right after he bought a cup of coffee). Within his boundaries, Yankoski shares his experiences, from which we can learn plenty. I keep coming back to that line: 'be the Christian you think you are.' That'll preach.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Challenge, September 10, 2005
This book makes you think about all the things we take for granted. The homeless in america are treated with an amazing level of distain. Mike offers pratical suggestions on how we can make the most difference in the life of the homeless. The reader is challenged to do something for the homeless and not just walk on by. Prepare to be challenged.

4-0 out of 5 stars An absolute must read!, July 24, 2005
At the young age of 20, upper-middle class Mike Yankoski traveled with his friend Sam to six cities in the United States: Denver, Washington D.C., Portland, San Francisco, Phoenix, and San Diego.

You might think that there is nothing special about traveling around the U.S. The thing is, Mike and Sam felt led by the Holy Spirit to live their faith in order to better understand the plight of the American homeless population and to witness how the Church is, or is not involved.

Under the Overpass consists of five months of stories and reflections of the preparation and travel of Mike and Sam on the "mean" streets of America. Mike discusses how it felt to plummet overnight from being an upper-middle class college student to a scum-of-the earth untouchable. With no money, panhandling became their job, and if it didn't pay well, then dumpster-diving for food was their mode of grocery shopping. They also had no safe place to live or sleep. Mike's stories of living with alcoholics, drug addicts, the mentally ill and social outcasts will astound and shock you as they did me.

All Christians who believe they are living their Christian faith would do well to read Under the Overpass and then have a good hard look into their hearts and lives. This is a book that could change your life and that of the people you encounter daily.

    Editorial Review

Forty years ago the University of California Press published an unusual manuscript by an anthropology student named Carlos Castaneda. The Teachings of Don Juan initiated a generation of seekers dissatisfied with the limitations of the Western worldview. Castaneda's now classic book remains controversial for the alternative way of seeing that it presents and the revolution in cognition it demands. Whether read as ethnographic fact or creative fiction, it is the story of a remarkable journey that has left an indelible impression on the life of more than a million readers around the world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Beginning of a Journey You Will Never, Ever Forget..., October 22, 2000
"The Teachings of Don Juan" is the first in a series of about 15 books by Carlos Casaneda describing the author's experiences with Yaqui Indian shamanism in Northern Mexico. As a studier of religion for many years (although not as knowledgeable as some scholars) I find these books to be utterly unique in their scope and subject matter. They are not like other New Age books. The journey that Castaneda takes his readers is mind-boggling, and his experiences are simply beyond what most people have even remotely encountered.

Castaneda first met Don Juan in the early 60's, before the hippy movement, before psychodelic drugs became popular. He was studying anthropology in Los Angeles, and Don Juan served as a field source for some fading knowledge of tribal and shamanistic rituals in Northern Mexico. Castaneda was specifically interested in peyote, a plant that gives its users hallicinations and mixes the senses in strange ways, and which LSD was meant to be a chemical reproduction of. Castaneda's first book presents a very detailed scholastic interpretation of his experiences. All books after the first simply focus on Castaneda's experiences with Don Juan.

Castaneda's drug experiences are different from other accounts I have read, because they are intimately tied with the Yaqui philosophy and mythology. The drugs only serve as a means to an end, not as the end in themselves. The first 2 books in the series describe Castaneda's drugs experiences with Don Juan, but from the 3rd book on, the drugs disappear forever and Carlos' experiences are actually more fantastic, more amazing, more unbelieveable as he slowly becomes a practicing sorceror, traveling to alternate dimensions and battling other sorcerors. Many of the books seem to reach a definitive conclusion, only to have Castaneda's perceived understanding of Don Juan's teachings completely destroyed in the next volume. Again these experiences do not in any way compare to magic and sorcery you might find in pagan, christian, or celtic mythology, nor does the "world-philosophy" of Don Juan resemble in any way the wholistic ideals of Eastern religions like Hinduism or Buddhism. How can you describe things most people have never seen before? Castaneda does a good job, considering the fantastic nature of some of his journeys. However, while the visions and magical feats are mesmerizing to read, I often found that Don Juan gave his most profound knowledge while simply talking to Castaneda.

Do to its subject matter, most Christians will find these books offensive, but I promise you that nothing in any of these volumes will turn you onto the path of Satan :) There is a certain participation required from the reader - Castaneda repeatedly affirms that everything he has ever written is absolutely true, but intelligent readers will be constantly wondering if such fantastic things could possibly exist. By turning off this little nagging "naysayer" in my own head and allowing myself to simply sink into the mood of the work and believe, I found that I was better able to intuitively understand the very abstract concepts that overwhelm you. However, because these accounts are SO unbelieveable, SO fantastic, SO unlike our everyday life here in the US, I found that I never confused my world with Castaneda's. It's like reading a book about walking on the Moon - you can understand and appreciate what it must have been like, but you don't start wearing a spacesuit to work!

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent and Entertaining Book, April 4, 2002
I enjoy Carlos Castaneda's books because they always offer an escape from reality -- in this case, I mean that quite literally.

Castaneda's books involve an age-old technique of storytelling, the teaching of a body of knowledge from a master to a pupil. In this case, the master, a Yaqui Indian known as Don Juan, teaches the ancient Toltec art of sorcery to a young, first-person narrator, Carlos Castaneda. This narrator is dubious and incredulous as Don Juan shows him things about the nature of reality and our perceptions of it, but increasingly he has to conclude that the world of Don Juan is an accurate description of the may facets of reality, and our modern world is merely one narrow view.

There is controversy over whether Castaneda's books are "real" --Castaneda was granted a PhD for his "field" work; but other scholars have found a lot of Castaneda's research to have no anthropological authenticity. Supporters of Castaneda dispute this.

That there is even an argument over whether the books are "real" or not indicates how good the stories are -- like the world of J.R.R. Tolkien, people really, desperately want to visit Castaneda's world. His books are riveting, fascinating, beautiful, and also very scary.

Although later books in the series (Tales of Power, for instance) are better than this introductory work; I think it is important to read the books in their order of writing, in order to get the "lessons" that Castaneda learns in the correct order.

I am a great fan of the books, even if they are 100% fiction. But one is really just never sure if they are. . .

3-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining but false, September 28, 2008
Having read several of Castanedas books and been strongly influenced by them as a youth, it was with great sadness that I subsequently found them to be almost completely imaginary. If you care to research Castaneda you will find that most of his experiences of flying through the air, encountering supernatural Mexican wisemen, receiving transcendental illumination etc etc happened while he was sitting in the library at UCLA. Many of the dates in the books are contradictory, much of the alleged herbal knowledge is potentially dangerous and essentially the bottom line is that you would be well advised to take all these books with a very large grain of salt. However that being said, they are fairly well written, quite entertaining and do contain some measure of truth after all. So go figure...

5-0 out of 5 stars Shamans Consciousness, October 25, 2000
This Book allow you to connect to an ancient Indian Shaman collection of 'extreme knowledge into nature'a captivating and enthraling reading. You will walk through the writer's experiences of altered realities, and other dimentions, a confrontational, sometimes frightful journey. Through The writer Carlos learns to be masterful and have "intention" in all he does in his life. When he comes back to California he cannot leave his Shaman life behind. I unintentionally found this book to be psycologically powerful for me. My life has changed by not acepting less than full intention in all that I do. I own a metaphysical healing store in La Habra and bring the power of Carlos Castanada writings here every day. The story goes something like this: A young student Carlos Costanada, goes to Mexico to meet an old Indian man who knows about medicinal & hallucinogenic plants. Carols doesen't really like him at first. Their relationship develops into Shaman and apprentice. Carlos doesn't choose to be Don Yuan's apprentice. He is there to take notes, and to study all he can for his degree. For aproximently 10 years Carlos unites with The Shaman and goes through intrepid and exhilarating experiences, beyond his scholarly responsibilities. A brimming study of What it means to be on the path of a Shamans apprentice. Is it true? Carlos says it is. First you must read all the books. The first one, is the only one where there are drug induced rituals. Don Yuan explains this is needed for Carlos because of his 'limited western mind's ability to see another reality'. This is one of the controversies about the book. Perfectly written.

1-0 out of 5 stars Enthralling book, but only until you realize it was all fantasy, January 24, 2008
That might not come from reading this book alone, as it is the most believable of the series. When I was a student, I like many others I know who will confess to having read a Castaneda book or two when pressed, went through a couple of years of Castanedism, reading the 8 classics 2 - 3 times each, and even the later four, quite different books a couple of times. Being someone who likes to give the benefit of the doubt until conclusive evidence proves otherwise, I must admit to only getting suspicious by Journey To Ixtlan, the third book. The second book, A Separate Reality, picks up on the supernormal happenings, but these are still within the realms of possibility when one considers Spiritualist literature. By Tales of Power, when at the end Carlos throws himself off a cliff and only survives by becoming pure perception, bouncing elastically back and forth 17 times between the two inherent realms of all creation, the tonal and the nagual, the game was up. In Carlos' terms, my assemblage point had just experienced a considerable shift into the realms of disbelief. The cocoon had burst. I read the remaining books still interested, but with the growing realization that I'd been had. Bizarre ideas not found in any other spiritual traditions, such as the necessity for people on the path of knowledge to kill their children to reclaim the power they'd lost to them, plus fill in the holes in their cocoons the children had caused, made me wary. This was surely not a philosophy the whole world should turn to, or else we'd be living in a fearful, lonely world with every man for himself.

However, this would be fine if the books weren't made out to be non-fiction. While I have seen these books placed with science fiction books in many libraries, in most European bookshops they're still sold with real, non-fiction 'Mind, Body, Spirit' books. The reason I give this book such a low rating is that an intensive study of his works, the books by his various colleagues, plus Richard De Mille's intelligent criticisms, can only lead to the conclusion that Castaneda, the writer, used Don Juan and Carlos, two fantasy characters, to verbalize his own beliefs, which were culled from his own spiritual and academic experience. That there are not some useful nuggets of wisdom, or advice in these books I do not deny. That is their very attraction, plus the belief that it all really happened, and is a new spiritual revelation. But as these are mixed up with increasingly bizarre assertions and beliefs (by the Art of Dreaming it seems all pretence at non-fiction had been given up), it is doubtful whether a lifetime devoted to these practices (as opposed to say, real shamanic practices) would lead to spiritual improvement. If you must have a Castaneda book in your library, rather get The Wheel of Time, a selection of the spiritual highlights of the first eight books, but consider it rather 'The best of the personal philosophy of Carlos Castaneda' than anything to do with Don Juan or Shamanism. This understanding may not have the romantic mix of wild Mexican deserts, ancient wisdom, wise old men and naive westerners which captures the hearts of so many, but it is a lot closer to the truth.

The anonymous ghost-writer at Schuster and Schuster who corrected Peruvian immigrant Castaneda's English for at least all of his earlier works (a sample of his writing from 1969 reveals it was still far from perfect, not like what is in books), giving the books their special character, certainly deserves more credit than he or she gets. But they are not written well enough to succeed as fiction, hence their continued classification as non-fiction, besides the intense academic embarrassment it would cause copyright holders UCLA to have to admit such a dramatic change in classification, from fact to fantasy, after having previously given the author a doctorate for his work! I give this book one star on the basis that any book claiming to represent the truth which is later found to be fraudulent deserves no stars by definition, so I must give the minimum rating allowed. The day this book is reclassified as Fiction, I will up my rating to 3 stars though, as it is a quite entertaining and authentic piece of fiction-posing-as-non-fiction.

At this point many a true believer will try play the only card they have left - the allegory or metaphor card, with the implication that the critic is not deep enough to have gathered that by now. However, there is a vital difference between a Castaneda book and an allegory - the latter always make it perfectly clear at the start that what follows is not to be taken as fact. A misunderstanding would mean losing the effect of the allegory. The Castaneda books, on the contrary, always start out with the reassurance that what follows is definitely fact. As UCLA Library stack request records prove that Castaneda was sitting in the library on the exact dates when he was supposed to be hanging out with Don Juan, it is thus fair to say that these books are neither factual nor allegorical.

If you have bought the book already, I might as well warn you not to waste any time on the Structural Analysis at the end. That was only placed there to make a point for Castaneda. Coming after the gripping narrative of the Teachings, the impossibly dry and intentionally unreadable analysis in academic jargon is merely meant to score points for Castaneda's one-time anthropological field of phenomenology, which is basically scientific reporting of the first-hand, direct experience type. Hopefully no true believers have fallen for Castaneda's joke and wasted time actually wading through it - I doubt it'll have done you more spiritual good than throwing yourself off a cliff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Experiments in syncretism and applied allegory, January 25, 2005
"In the course of Castaneda's books, the reader may begin to doubt the existence of the Indian Don Juan, and many other things besides. But that has no importance. So much the better if the books are a syncretism rather than an ethnographic study, and the protocol of an experiment rather than an account of an initiation" (Deleuze and Guattari, A Thousand Plateaus, pp 161-162).

Why not think of this as an experiment, or a literary lab report? Castaneda's project is to transform threads from Nietzsche and Gurdjieff and folk life into practice. In what way did he turn into a crow? It's for you, dear reader, to decode Castaneda's testimony. I like this kind of reading, myself; the genre of experiment and sly reporting I find quite rewarding. You just can't take it literally. (It's a dumb idea to assume the literal reading of any book is the best reading of all books.)

Other extremely valuable volumes in this clever genre include: Beelzebub's Tales to His Grandson (Gurdjieff), Matrix of Mystery (H.V. Guenther), Creative Meditation and Multidimensional Consciousness (Govinda), A Thousand Plateaus (quoted above), and most importantly Tarthang Tulku's Time Space Knowledge series and the Shambhala books of Chogyam Trungpa.

Homage to Sukhasiddhi and all true teachers.

For anyone interested in spiritual guidance that is far from ordinary, but warmly uplifting, should read this book. Castaneda is a wonderful author who thoroughly explains his visits to see the sorceror don Juan Matas. During these visits the reader comes to many spiritual realizations along with Castaneda, who narrates the story. This book is a delightful read which I recommend to anyone who likes to read. period

My first reading of CC's book, "The Teachings..." occurred back in 1975. I have read it many more times since then. What this book did was help me establish once and for all, that there does exist the realm of the unexplained/unexplainable. Things do happen to us that we are much too frightened to confide in others, for fear of reprisals. Left alone we begin to question our own sensibilites and in an act of self-preservation dismiss this part of our reality.

What CC does for us is help verify and describe these unexplained/unexplainable events. It is a journey that only the pure of heart and courageous can attempt.

Carlos Castaneda's "The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui way of Knowledge" is a vivid yet dark and spiritually disturbing novel of Carlos' experience with the teachings of the Indian Yaqui knowledge led by his mentor Don Juan. Carlos Castaneda takes us through his own spiritual journey to become "a man of knowledge" being the strongest and fearless man with a heart to love. His expressive writing allows you to become engulfed in his mind and to feel his emotions. Brilliantly done, this novel has moved many and will continue to do so as Carlos Castaneda and his experience makes each and every one of his readers question their own spiritaul guidance, and maybe one day have the desire to become a man of knowledge. "For me there is only the traveling on paths that have a heart, on any path that may have heart. There I travel, and the only worthwhile challenge is to traverse its full length. And there I travel, looking, looking breathlessly." -Don Juan

I cannot recommend this book and those that follow too highly. While this "introduction" may be less engaging than the books that follow, that means only that it is merely very engaging, rather than obsessively engaging. I see from previous reviews that the "fact or fiction" debate still rages. To those who have not yet read any of the books, I would say only this on that matter: If you "get" these books, the "fact or fiction" debate is less than irrelevant. To those about to begin, I wish you well on the journey. ... Read more

Being a teenager myself, I can truly say that there are not many devotionals out there that I really have an interest in. Even some of the ones for teens I find not so great. However, this one really is the best. The stories for each day of the year are applicable in our everyday lives and the scriptures help to encourage and build-up your spirit. And it is not so advanced that the beginner can not understand it. Being a Christian teenager today is not easy and getting the word of God is so important and this book really helps.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good first devotion book, January 5, 2006
This book is great for someone just starting out with devotions. It's more implied to new comer Christians but is packed full with information and prayer, and loads of topics on every teens mind. It breaks subjects down day by day, and can really bring you closer to Christ. A Good christmas present so they can start on the first day of the year!

I loved it. It is 365 dated daily devotions aimed at teens. Shellenberger has written a lot of books, most of them aimed at girls or parents of girls, but she does a good job of making the transition to writing for a mixed audience. Each day has a page of material, often interesting stories, sometimes a little hokey, but that comes off okay too. Then there is a short paragraph on the side summing up, and a list of about four scriptures. That whole thing plus a prayer takes us less than ten minutes every school morning. I recommend it for people with teens in the house once it is part of the morning routine, it brings little complaint and a lot of good lessons on a wide variety of importent topics. We're starting on her devo book #2 now.

It's applicable to their ages and doesn't take but 5 minutes or so each evening to read through together. I highly recommend it to others who wish to have daily devotions with their teens.

His practical experience provides a wellspring of profound spiritual insight, reflected in these timeless meditations on the most famous psalm of all, on the relationship between the Good Shepherd and his sheep, and on the sacrificial role of Christ the Lamb of God. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book on Psalm 23, October 29, 2006
This is the best book on Psalm 23. I have read almost all the books on Psalm 23 (commentaries, sermons and critical books) in the Bible (and Shepherd Motif/Imagery). I used to feel to hit a wall to preach Psalm 23 for a long time. The author truly breaks the wall to open my eyes. This is one of the first books that I use for discipleship and leadership training for the churches that I ministered for last 15 years. And I have bought a few hundred copies to my fellow Christians to appreciate Psalm 23.

Passion. It's the fuel for success, for dreams, for life. But too many teens focus their energy and passion on the wrong thing-the wrong person. Dateable pulls no punches in telling teens the truth about dating while also directing their passion toward a greater purpose in life. Teen relationships seldom last, the authors point out, so why should teens invest so much of themselves emotionally, physically, and spiritually? The answer? They shouldn't. Instead, they can protect their hearts, live with excitement, and enjoy relationships in a way that enhances rather than detracts from those they'll have in the future. With Justin and Hayley "telling it like it is," teens will learn how to be dateable and how to evaluate the dateability of their latest crush. And they'll get some much-needed perspective on sex, his/her communication, clothes, God-even "chick flicks." Dateable also includes sidebars, quizzes, callouts, and more. ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for every teenager!, August 29, 2004
"Dateable" has to be one of the best books I've read in awhile. In fact, I wish I'd read it a few months ago when I was going through a tough time with a guy. But the facts in this book have made me realize the mistakes I made and how I should feel about the mistakes he made.

This funny yet truthful book is blunt and to-the-point, no matter how much it hurts. It explains exactly how guys' and girls' minds work, and now I know that I haven't been judging teenage guys too harshly--they really are as perverted as I thought! Justin Lookadoo and Hayley DiMarco explain that any guy, even if he is a Christian, is going to be a guy first. There are also fun quizzes and doodles throughout the book.

I think this is a great book for any teenager. My outlook on so many things has changed now. One thing the authors suggested was, when you're with a guy, imagine that someone is taking pictures of what you're doing, and then showing them to your parents, pastor, grandma, etc. How would you feel about what you were doing? This made me realize that some things, even though they seem right, must be saved for marriage.

I also like that the book isn't one-sided and doesn't force opinions on people. It said things like "kissing, hugging, and holding hands while dating is okay. But if you believe that kissing is wrong, then don't do it." It also said a lot of truths about girls--like the fact that girls like bad boys, but they'll just hurt them in the end, so nice guys should take on the adventuresome traits that bad boys have, but not the jerky traits.

I don't agree with "Spiderfriend" and "a reader" (who wrote a review on July 17, 2004), who don't like the idea of the authors portraying guys as pansies. The thing is, readers, most guys these days are wimps who expect the girls to do all the work. I think this book encourages guys to not be like that. Maybe the fact that guys should be the leaders in relationships is old-fashioned, but it is the way God intended relationships to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended to all teenagers!, December 4, 2004
"Dateable" immediately caught my attention when I first saw it at a bookstore. When I read through this Christian book, I found it very helpful, truthful, and funny. A little hurtful, but hey, sometimes the truth hurts.

Justin Lookadoo and Hayley Morgan gives the readers an inside scoop on what our opposite sex does not want us to know. They tell us what both guys think and what girls think.

Personally, I thought each page in this book was very creative. The authors put in quizzes, little drawings, and comments on the side of the page. They point out how the way things begin will the way things will end.

This book offers many steps on what one should take when they enter a relationship. Girls, don't get hooked by the bait that your guy throws to every girl. Hold out and hold on. Guys, stay consistent, control what you say, and be powerful.

I strongly suggest reading this book, the authors gives personal examples that the readers might relate to. Check it out!

1-0 out of 5 stars The dating game, September 11, 2007
We bought this book for my daughter who has just started a relationship. This book teaches almost the opposite of what we have been teaching at home. The author instructs that dating should be just for fun. He also states quite vehemently that their dating relationships will not last, but also says that dating is practice for marriage. How is having multiple dating partners in High school a good practice for having a lifelong committment down the road? We need to teach our daughters to date responsibly. A better book to read is "The Truth About Guys" by Chad Eastman. It reveals things about guys while building a girl's self-esteem.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Truth on Teen Dating, May 18, 2005
This book was so helpful on getting to know how the oppsite sex thinks and how teen relationships should be portrayed. The book brought new light on many situations and emotions that teenagers feel during relationships. Rather than having ideas and "hot to's" on dating, the book made the reader ask themselves if they were ready to date, and what some of the consequences-and benefits were. I really appreaciated both author's points of views on the subjects--Morgan was more helpful on getting through to girl's emontions, and Lookadoo was definiately more to-the-point. Some memorable points they brought up were that girls should not take the lead in relationships, and that guys should take control when they ask people out. Although many may be offended that the book tells girls that they are too chatty and need to be mysterious and that many Christian guys are becoming weaker, the steryotypes tend to be true in our society today. The book's points were emphasized by the straightforward, playful design and fun games and quizzes in between. Overall, Dateable is a book that should be read by all teens who are ready to understand teen dating and how teenage guys and girls think.

1-0 out of 5 stars Exaggeration: Is it? Yes., December 30, 2007
Now I'd like to start off by saying that I have not read this whole book. I found it in my 15 year old sister's bedroom, chuckled, picked it up, and read a few pages from various sections. So if you'd like to dismiss my opinion based on that, I don't have to tell you that you have every right to do so.

I'm not going to say that you should not buy this book, as much as I believe that these authors need to reeducate themselves before attempting to develop a sequel or any book based on relationships or having to do with "facts" or "reality." However, I must point out that this book is based solely on generalizations and stereotypes among teens today. In some instances, I agree that, sure, something they say may be true more than 50% of the time. But when they stand behind their opinion so strongly to say things like "Don't forget, in the end, no matter how sweet he is, he is male first. And that means he has one goal, and that is the physical pay-off," I can't really stand idly by, being a male myself, and not call that too bold of a statement. Other instances such as "Well, yeah, when the guy says he loves you, he really means it. Seriously. He does. He loves you. And he loves his mom. He loves his car, his dog, and pizza. He loves winning the game," are very common, in which the authors use sarcasm aimed at teens to induce a sense of foolishness.

Though this book was written by both a male and female author, it's sole purpose seems to be to strengthen the opinion that all males engage in relationships just for sex. Everything they do is done for themselves.

Voicing an opinion is fine, it provides entertainment and useful information for you to use if you ever meet someone who opposes that opinion. In this case, however, the authors go about changing the readers' opinion in a destructive way. It makes girls afraid to date. It attempts to makes teens believe that the relationship they're in doesn't stand a chance by outright saying "Whatever relationship you are in right now, know this: It will not last. Period. The end. I know, you are sooo into this guy or girl - but understand that this relationship will not last. You will break up. It will end."

Oh, and that leads me to one of the most interesting parts of the book: "Guys are thoughtful. They put time and effort into finding out what works for them and what doesn't. If what a guy says o you is believable, it's because he has practiced it. He has polished the words to perfection. Question: Where do you think he polished it? On his buds? Uh, that would be no. He fine-tuned his finesse on other girls. He played the game many times before using the exact same lines he's using on you. Yeah, I know, all that's over for him now that he found you. He was clownin' when he was with them, but he finally found you and now he means it. Right. And the tooth fairy left me a dollar last night too."

What this book does is attempt to destroy any faith in real feelings. It doesn't even have the decency to use the words "maybe" or "mostly" or "could," just "is" "is" "is."

If you're going to buy this book, buy it for entertainment purposes only. There isn't a sentence within its pages that contain an ounce of faith, and without that, they all lead to an untrue, hopeless abyss.

2-0 out of 5 stars Some good points, but mostly a bad influence, August 12, 2007
I like reading books giving advice on the opposite sex and tips in how us girls can take that in mind with the way we approach guys, talk to them, etc.--according to what sort of personality we have. That's why when I found Dateable in the bookstore, I was interested to buy and read it.
Throughout the book, there were some VERY helpful and insightful points and then there was the rest of the book. Lookadoo explains repeatedly that breakups are a lot less painful when you don't put as much of yourself into the relationship rather than baring all of yourself at once. Now, I think to keep a relationship up and running, it requires the guy and the girl to put themselves out on that line that will either bring a lot of happiness or heartbreak. While I think it is good to limit the amount of information you give to other people you are wanting to get to know romantically (at first), I also know that it's a necessity of growing up to experience heartache and deep, happy relationships. If people are going to learn what they want for marriage, they need to date and experience life. If everybody just waited until they were adults and old enough to get married, they'd have the same amount of intelligence on love and relationships as an adolescent and we'd never find the right person.

Lookadoo also makes it a big point to just give up on relationships when you're a teenager because adolescents can't fall in love and it's not going to work out anyway. Plus, according to Lookadoo, if you try to make a relationship work when you're a teenager--you're just practicing for divorce. I think a big reason people even get divorced today is because they're to lazy to try and focus on the trivial parts of the marriage. Isn't just giving up before anything ever happens between the two people practicing divorce?

Lookadoo also proved to be very sexist towards both boys and girls. He tells girls in his chapter: "Girls, Shut Up" that we need to play hard to get and be mysterious so the guys will feel victorious when they finally win you--basically, to just be a trophy for the guys to win. Then he tells shy guys to stop being wimps and be a man. And girls aren't supposed to ask guys out because it makes them feel even more wimpish. I think the author spends too much time throughout the book stereotyping both guys and girls and doesn't realize that everyone is an individual and may/may not agree with his his opinions. That's the biggest problem with this book: he fails to be diverse and tend to different types of scenarios and people.

I felt offended by one particular drawing in the book. Another reviewer mentioned on here that she was offended by the quote: "if girl's dress like a piece of meat, they're gonna be thrown on the b-b-q." Thing is, it's very true. Not all guys, but there are some guys who will take advantage of girls and their emotions if they think the girls easy. I'm not stupid in this subject--I've seen it happen enough to know. So in that respect, I really agree with Lookadoo. But at the same time, he needs to encourage girls to be themselves and not wear clothes that don't flatter their figures because it will draw bad attention. And Lookadoo didn't need to take it to the extent of drawing a picture of a shop that sells women's body parts. I pretty much got the point with his words--he didn't need to draw a human delicatessen.

My point: I didn't really like this book as a whole. But, at the same time,I was able to keep my mind open and found some really profound statements that have helped with past and present relationships. I don't prohibit or recommend this book. As you can see, people really liked or hated this book. All I ask is to keep an open mind.

So, this is how it goes, this book is a definate must-read for any teenager wanting to date. I am in that column and am having guy-troubles...so I picked it up and read it. For a Christian, it is important to keep focus on both God and whatever else is going on in your life. Justin and Hayley (the authors) understand that just not dating is not gonna happen for most teenagers...so they are offering a way to date that is best for us. They tell us exactly what we need to know to date and love Jesus and not fall...it's important stuff, I know from experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for all ages, January 7, 2006
This book is possibly one of the most... insanely creative teen dating books I've ever read. I myself am fresh out of college. I heard this was a good book, and not realizing the target audience was teenagers, I bought it, and the companion Datable Rules. The book is very well written. A little... odd, but very creative. The doodles on every page will keep any teenager's attention. I found them a bit distracting, but they tend to be very useful visual tools when making a point.
Each chapter is well thought out and put together. Even though not all the examples they used applied to myself, the examples they did use would fit well with what teenagers are doing.
If you are a young adult and pick this book up, it's not a bad read. It gets straight to the point in many areas. If you're new to the dating scene as a young adult and are totally confused as to what's going on with girls and guys, what you should do or not do, the book does give some good clear outlines to start from.
Dateable also will give a few other books for both guys and gals to extend their reading into.
Ya, go ahead and read it. If you don't like it, give it to someone else or donate it to your church/public/school library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dateable- An Excellent Book, March 5, 2005
I read Dateable and found it very helpful. A lot of the advice was sound as a bell and answered many of the questions I had about relationships. However, I disagreed heavily with some of the content, such as:
    # All girls want commitment RIGHT NOW and doodle 'Mrs. Mary-Sue Hollings' or whatever all over their notebooks.
    # Your boyfriend/girlfriend MUST BE A CHRISTIAN AND THIS IS NON-NEGOTIABLE!
    # If a boy is alone with a girl he cannot control himself. (In my opinion, this relieves the boy of all personal responsibility and makes everything the girl's fault for being 'impure')
Overall, however, I really liked the book. Although it is definetly written for the Evangelical Christian teen, It is helpful for everybody. Definetely should be on the required reading list for a girl/guy new to the dating game, especially if the parents never dated much.

    1-0 out of 5 stars Rules?, May 3, 2006
I just want girls and guys alike to know that they are created in the image of God, and no one should be able to tell them how dateable they are. Girls, if you are independent, be independent! If you are the one to call the guy up or ask him out, do it! If you have a strong personality, God gave it to you...keep it! Guys, if you're sensitive, be sensitive! If not every part of you is the steroetypical guy that this book says...it is okay! Oh, and don't buy into the idea that guys are male first, and Christian second. God is above gender. All I am trying to say is that no one can tell you the kind of qualities that you should have to be dateable. Be who God created you to be, with all of your gifts, talents, and characteristics. If everyone was the same, life would be boring! If all girls were dependent, not adventurous, and completely mysterious and played hard to get, the choice for guys would be quite small. If all guys were insensitive, dangerous, independent, in control of the relationship, and always thinking about sex, girls would find the pickings slim. Remember whose you are...God's. Don't let rules define you. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

This volume shows the reader the means by which a "man of power" sees, as opposed to merely looking, and how by his concentrated "seeing" he can, indeed must, "stop the world." In it, Carlos Castaneda describes the lessons, the omens, the exercises of the will and body, the arduous trials and tests, the simple yet mysterious demonstrations, the extraordinary visions and experiences by which don Juan, his mentor and friend, prepares him for the task of perceiving things as they are, instead of describing them by the words, conventions and standards of conventional, a priori ideas and language. Here, in the high mountains and in the bright arid desert, Castaneda reaches for power in a series of startling encounters with the unknown--a confrontation with death and the past in the form of an albino falcon, with the twilight wind, with a flesh-and-blood mountain lion, with a mountain fog--and learns the techniques, the concentration, the compassion of the hunter, the man who is "without routines, free, fluid." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic of Modern Spirituality, May 11, 1999
This is a life-changing book and a spiritual classic (I rarely give ANYTHING 5 stars) but someone ought to mention that there is a certain amount of controversy about the accuracy of Castaneda's Don Juan series. Researcher Richard de Mille is probably the most even-handed of the critics and The_Don_Juan_Papers is worth a read, though some of the criticisms are merely carping small-mindedness.

Regardless of your attitude toward Castaneda's (or Don Juan's!)literal accuracy the series, of which Journey_to_Ixtlan is the best, presents a coherent and engaging spiritual existentialism. A Must Read!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than his first two books, February 4, 2001
It took a lot for me to get through Castaneda's first book, The Teachings of Don Juan. I was totally unimpressed with it. The whole book was essentially about how a Yaqui Indian "sorcerer" put naive Carlos, then a graduate student in anthropology from UCLA doing research on a hallucinogenic plant, through a bunch of weird drug trips that shook his view of reality. And to me, that doesn't jive at all.

But in Journey to Ixtlan, Castaneda goes back and says, "wait, start over, reset. I was wrong about all of that drug stuff, it's really not necessary, don Juan just put me through that because I was too stubborn and 'rational' to see that there may be other views of reality than the ones I subscribe to." In this book he discovers that he doesn't need drugs to experience other worlds. Rather, there are a series of practices for right living that enable the possibility of perceiving in nonordinary ways.

So Journey to Ixtlan is where the real lessons about living life in the warrior's way begin. I recommend this book highly as a starting point for Castaneda's work; forget the first two books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the journey, April 17, 2005
Forget the debate as to whether Castaneda's writings were a hoax or that his books became important reading for the drug culture. Although I suggest you read his first two books before reading this one but if you read only one book by Carlos Castaneda this is the book to read. Be his books accurate reporting by a cultural anthropologist (which is becoming increasingly more and more doubtful), mysticism or hokum, this particular book is quite moving and lyrical. And whether his stories are real or imagined and whether the teaching he transmutes came from Don Juan or from his own mind by his knowledge as a trained anthropologist the underlying mystical principles of these stories cannot be dismissed out of hand.
Shaman, poet and perhaps an academic scoundrel it is Castaneda's poetry and story telling that comes shining through in this book.
If Castaneda's books were a hoax and were represented as cultural anthropology as a better hook to sell books it is a shame because he did a disservice to science and to his legacy. Still I myself, as a former researcher in Harvard University's anthropology department and a student of human ethology, can forgive this sin on one level and enjoy this book as a powerful work of liturature.
For if there has been a wrong that has been committed against anthropology it is one that was done by the way the books were marketed and perhaps by the author's personality itself. The works themselves should not suffer and be shunned for this.
His legacy would have been better served if he wrote these same works as a writer of fiction.
I believe the author would have been wiser to present his works the way Gurdjieff presented "Beelzebub's Tales to his Grandson" rather than obstinately insisting there really was such a person as Don Juan (even if in the off chance that his teacher did exist).
Despite the controversy his writing stands on its own and Journey to Ixtlan is a powerful, touching, enchanting and beautiful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars when I was young & lost girl this book set me on a good path, April 26, 1998
    I started reading ( & still re-read) Don Juan's
books by "Carlitos" long long ago , (mid 70's) &
still thank God that somehow I found his books
. The most important thing this book taught me
is to ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR MY ACT
    IONS .
    I was young & lost & scared & a mess & that
concept had never crossed my mind. I was us
-ed to blaming others & their actions towards me
etc....for the outcomes of my life.
Well let me tell youuuuuuu something. What an
EYE OPENER !!!!! ha ha ha . I also leared not
to judge people & still try not to..... I remember
Don Juan used to say something lilke " do not
send your bad thoughts to a person that may have
done something wrong. It doesn't do them any good or yourself."
I adore Don Juan &' Carlitos' as he used to call him. Don Juan
had the BEST sense of humor I've ever seen.
Castanedas' book enchanted me, terrified me
( to the point that I slept with the lights on a couple
of nights ) enlightened me, inspired me & finally
changed me inside for the better.
I got a lot out of this one book so I read the rest
of them & loved them ALL! , Journey to Ixtlan I
have read so much it fell apart! but I love it .
It is my bible on how to be a decent person.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Most Significant Books of the 20th Century, July 5, 2002
Castaneda did the world a favor when he began chronicling his apprenticeship with Don Juan Matus. Whether or not Don Juan was one or three real people is irrelevant since what Castaneda learns is highly relevant to all of us. Learning to "stalk" the self, learning to achieve equilibrium in a world full of petty tyrants (including the petty tyrant of the "self") are among the most trenchant lessons Castaneda provides us. This book is the place to start with Castaneda and you'll even find within it Don Juan doing magical passes 25 years before Castaneda finally admitted there were such things. The books by Castaneda are the most important books in my life and I highly recommend them to anyone who's after an alternative way of looking at life and the human condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Start with this book, February 2, 2004
If you're interested in Castaneda, this is the book you should read first. It covers the same time period as the previous two, but Carlos is no longer as dense as when he wrote them. This book opens the doors to a whole new way to view the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Castaneda's series, September 27, 2004
All Carlos' books are exceptional. For first time readers, I would read Ixtlan first, than 'Teachings'. Than just read them all. A great guide to understanding whats important in life. Don Juan insists you are responsible for your actions and take each action as if it was your last.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Key to Power, November 30, 2003
I just finished re-reading Journey to Ixtlan for the sixth time, and each time I read the book I find new wisdom and a new lesson I can relate to in my own life. There are crucial lessons here, whether or not you believe the actual experiences that happen. Through his relationship with Don Juan, Carlos Castenada reminds us of how truly mysterious the world is, and how much awe and wonder there is in ourselves, if we are brave enough to be willing to see it.
The book really has very little to do with peyote or drug usage persay, it has much more to do with questioning the very foundations on which we base the world to become aware of reality. Not one that has been dumbed down by definition and categorization but experienced as it is. I see a direct link here with "I Am That" (a book of talks/interviews with an Indian Guru), and even The Matrix.
But the sense of power in nature and the drawn out detailed depictions in nature are like very few books I've ever read.
This is a great book for an English Class, Existential Philosophy, or Cultural Anthropology, and I do not see this is as a work of fiction. At the very least it is an invitation or reminder for us to rediscover the magic in our own lives again.
It is a thoroughly enjoyable read - suspend your analytical mind for two hundred sixty pages and enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book led me to Ixtlan, January 17, 2005
I haven't read it in years, but it has stayed with me.
I actually took the bus from Mazatlan, Mexico to Ixtlan del
Rio and spent a few days in Ixtlan. I showed this book to
the locals and they had not heard of it. (This was in the mid
l980's). They were beautiful, simple people and not widely read.
Ixtlan is more a metaphor than a reality I realized.
I have read several of the Carlos Castenadas books and
the details of each blur in my mind...but the essence of what
they taught live with me. Its about being in the flow,
about balancing energy, about trusting nature, and so much more!
I read them before I knew a whit about metaphysics. Now
that I am a 25 year veteran and teach this stuff, I realize
that Carlos gave me a wonderful spiritual foundation in these
books. One of my favorite lines of his is: "Follow the Path
With Heart". Just read it, keep your mind open, and be willing
to receive change. It will all be positive, I assure you!

3-0 out of 5 stars You can never go home again..., May 28, 2000
The question with regard to Carlos Casteneda is this: If we accept the premise that this book is largely fiction, does that in turn trivialize the message he is trying to impart? Just what is his message? If the message is that the world is full of witches, sorcerers, irridescent coyotes, allies, and phantoms, then the answer must be an unqualfied "yes". These entities are no more real, and have no more importance than angels and miracles, zombies, ghosts, or anything else whose existence cannot be objectively observed. However, despite the cult that has grown up around these writings, I don't think this is what Casteneda had in mind. Don Juan warned against being trapped in the world of sorcery, just as he did against getting trapped in the world of everyday concerns. It was when Carlos, the character, realized that he and the dung beetle were on even terms, even though their sensory worlds were profoundly different, that he was finally able to "stop the world". The warrior, says don Juan, takes responsibility for his life, and interacts with every event as if it is his last. Moreover, once one makes the transition to the path of knowledge, one can never go back. "Ixtlan" is by definition childhood's home that one can never return to. These are timeless and profound concepts, that transcend the venue of leaping shadows and bridges in the fog.

Casteneda is an unusual writer, and his insistence on portraying his character as an annoying whiner gets a little wearing after a while. The two messages I found in this work - that the world is much more than appears, and that it is important not to sleepwalk through our lives - these concepts never wear thin for me. And the observation that our modern man can learn these lessons from a superstitious old Yaqui is endlessly gratifying to me.

There are many ways to get to the place that Casteneda is trying to show us, and therefore I can't place this volume in the "must read" category. But the concepts have value, and you won't regret the effort in getting to the last page. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one of the most inspiring books i have ever read!, May 11, 1999
Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul is an excellent book for every teenager, and anyone who wants to understand what problems teenagers are facing these days. This book contains stories that range from incredibly funny to sad and serious, but yet uplifting. All teenagers facce hardships that have to do with self esteem and fitting in. It is a book that you can go to when you are having problems. I feel tha tevery teenager can relate to this book. It is a good book to uplift your spirits. I recently had some trouble with one of my friends. The book was very helpful and helped us get over our differences. However, there was one story that really touched me. it was titled "A Lesson for Life". The quote at the beginging sort fo explains it all: "The turning point in the process of growing up is when you discover the core strength within you that survives all hutr." It is about a boy who stand up for another boy when he is being picked on. This story changed my life in a way. I started to look around, and I realized that many people around me felt that they did not fit in. I suddenly thought that I was not very confident about myself, but I wanted to help others. The less that I started to worry about myself, and getting to know others, the more and more confident I became about myself. I now have a very happy life, and when someone feels down about their self, I can relate to them and give them advice. More people in this world should be friendly and stick up for others. The book teaches life lessons that everyone should be aware of. One of my friends's parents read the teenage version of htis book when her daughter was done. They previously had a rocky relationship, and everything has changed for the better since then. Another story in this book that has helped me in the struggle as a teenager was titled "No Matter What Happens". It is about growing up and how to deal with it. This book is a great place to turn to when you are looking for inspriration or help in life. You can relate to almost everything in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kleenex Needed to Read, December 1, 1999
Warning: Do not read this book without a box of Kleenex. This book is filled with stories that make you smile, make you laugh, and yes, some that make you cry. Anyone not knowing what to get the teen in their life his year, get them this book, and the first one too. Whenever I am down, I can pick up this book and I know that I am not the only one out there that feels down sometimes. I cannot say enough about this book, it is wonderful, inspiring, and leaves a permanent mark on you heart. There is something in this book for everyone: the reject, the popular kids, the loners, the caring, and especially the delicate teen, whose egos are easily shaped by one cruel comment. This book proves the statement: you are not alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chicken Soup 2 Nutrition Label, February 15, 2000
Have a problem, read Chicken Soup. Feel down in the dumpsters, read Chicken Soup. Having another great day, read Chicken Soup. Wondering what Chicken Soup is by now, it's an inspiring novel by three different authors including Jack Canfield. Within this book, Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul 2, are a series of life stories written and told by the people that had them happen to them, both sad and glad. For instance, one story tells about a boy who strives to tell his dad he loves him, but he can't, being held back by common teenage embarassment. Ironically, later that day his dad is killed as result of a tragic and deadly accident. Out of this, the boy learns when it comes to emotions not to hold them back. I myself really enjoyed the book and was introduced to it from other friends of mine also fans of the Chicken Soup series. As stated in the author's note of the story, the book helps soothe one's emotions when read, and truthfully it does. It teaches you you're not alone, and a problem you may have can be fixed. Also the organization in this book was phenomenal, breaking it up into 6 parts: relationships, friendship, love and kindness, tough stuff, family, and learning lessons. This was a great book and overall experience, and as you see I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Is One Of Their Best Books Ever!, February 18, 2000

    5-0 out of 5 stars A great book, January 31, 2000
I read this book over the summer, and it was great. It tells about other peoples' problems and stories. Some of them are sad. One story is about an overweight girl and a boy who sat next to her in class. They became very good friends and had a lot in common. They went to every Friday night football game. One day someone put a rose in her locker, and she found out it was the boy. When she thanked him he told her that she was very special. They always kept in touch. A few years after they graduated Bobby died from a sort of cancer. There are many cool stories by famous people. I have read many Chicken Soup books. I recommend this book to teenagers.

    4-0 out of 5 stars A guide to life, October 13, 2005
Chicken Soup for the Soul III, quite inspirational I'd have to say. As soon as I picked up this book, I just couldn't put it down. As I continuted to read, I got more addicted to the lives of each author. As I read a few sentences in each expostion of certain stories, I automatically would HAVE to continue reading, and evventually, the story would take me onto the next story. Hearing about "real world" examples, made me feel like not such a fool, if it had happened to me before. These short stories provide us, meaning teenagers, the oppurtunity to listen to others are age, and what they have to say. The author's actually have the guts to express and let other's read these life changing stories, so it'd be nice if they were good for something. Throughout the book, there are numerous stories in each sections. The Sections include, friendship, relationships, the power of love, family, lessons, tough stuff, overcoming obstacles, self-discovery and growing up. All of these topics are vital to teenage lives. So many things are bound to happen during what most people call these "rough" years, which would mean teenage years. The protagonist in these stories are the author's who reveal life secrets when they've been through something rough, or good. It gives us the oppurunity to reflect on life, love and learning. As a teenager, we go through so much, by reading the Chicken Soup books, it puts us in the position to deal with life, and realize others go through dramatic times as well. The themes of this book is life, love, and learning. Many stories were tear jearkers, yet some would give me the giggles. Honestly, this isn't one of those "fake books that the author just makes up a bunch of stories about the lives of teenagers." It's a book where real teenagers pour their hearts out, so other's can listen to what they go through. If you enjoyed Chicken Soup for the Soul II, you would absolulty love Chicken Soup for the soul III, it continues on with more dramatic life changing stories that could even make an impact on your life. This book is truly a NEED to read book.

For those many readers who liked the first edition of Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul, here comes yet another helping, with 101 more stories on subjects such as love, friendship, random acts of kindness, etc. This volume contains even more poems that you can read quickly when you just need a boost of self-confidence. This book has even more stories on relationships, how to overcome obstacles and learning important lessons. I have to say that I liked this Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul better than the previous ones, because there is even more stories dealing with tough stuff such as anorexia, divorce, etc. Each story is unique in its own way but one thing is for sure: each story touches the reader and makes them stop and think about how all of their actions have consequences, some good, some bad.

Jennifer Love Hewitt contributed yet another story for this book, as well as Andrew Keegan and Elisa Donovan. I strongly encourage teenagers, pre-teens and even adults to read this book in order to better understand the feelings teenagers' are experiencing, and how to deal with these often confusing emotions. Lovers for the Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul will not be disappointed, especially when they learn that a Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul III is also in stores.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Purchase Ever Made, February 8, 2009
I was so grateful for this book. Both my 15 yo and I read it together and discussed each chapter. We have even referred back to it from time to time to discuss situations she runs into currently to see how they should be handled or to refresh her determination to do it God's way. A standing ovation. Supreme! Sarah, let's have another!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have a teen or pre-teen daughter, get this book!, August 6, 2008
What I like about this book is that my pre-teen daughter can read this book without being defiled with information or examples that are not appropriate for her age or experience. I actually benefited from some of the advice because the principles are applicable all, e.g. trust, patience, etc. It is also great for opening communication with your daughter even if you don't come from the same background as the author.

Get it before your daughter is in trouble. I read a friend's copy and am ordering it for my daughter right away.

    5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING, June 15, 2008
I recently purchased this book and have enjoyed everything about it. I often find myself talking and thinking of things that I shouldn't, but often not knowing how to capture and stop those bad habits. Sarah Mally gives reason, examples, and Scripture of keeping yourself mentally and physical pure for the "Perfect ONE" God has for you. This book has helped to change my understanding of why it is so importantto choose God before anything and fill my whole heart with Him only. If you are a young girl struggling with feelings and thoughts you should purchase this book. PLEASE READ THIS BOOK!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Before you meet prince charming, January 10, 2009
This book presents the option of waiting for God's choice for you in marriage in a very readable and memorable way. Not only does the author give reasons for waiting, but also what do to while you are waiting. I enjoyed very much reading it with my 2 girls.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must read for any teen, July 4, 2008
i wish i had read this book when i was a teen! it is written
in a charming style, with a "princess" story at the beginning
of each chapter, and then broken down by subject into the concept
that was introduced in the story. it is practical, and simplifies
hard to deal with subjects using easy to understand examples. i
will be reading this periodically to my daughter and son, until
they are fully ready to find a suitable marriage partner. i highly
    recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent. Recommend to all young ladies, April 20, 2008
I do recomend this book, heartily, to all young ladies. It wasn't too graphic, and it has gems in it. Not only does it talk about the importance of doing it God's way, it gives you tips for how to fill the time you are waiting (and it's not trying to lure Prince Charming in with skimpy clothes and seduction), by drawing closer to God and preparing yourself for the time when you will be a helpmeat.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, February 8, 2010
I have an 11 year old daughter who is in middle school. The phrase "My friend is dating so and so" is a phrase I hear often. What does it really mean for an 11 year old to be dating, well I am not really sure. What I am sure of is that, it is obvious that many of these very young girls and boys are developing an interest in the opposite sex. It would be my guess that parents are not looking down the road to what this really means.
I was interested in boys at a very early age. I was not given guidance on having a pure relationship or coached on the repercussions of early relationships and how they would effect me long term.
This book says it beautifully. It is written for the pre teen to teen who is thrown into a world of thinking you must have a boyfriend to be acceptable. It coaches you through using a story about a princess and then following each chapter there is a life application portion. The story is so well written you can't wait to see how it turns out.
I recommend every parent to read the book and see for yourself how moving and touching the story of someone who chose to wait makes a differnce. It is an encouragement to all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for anyone, but especially Christian girls, October 16, 2009
I really appreciated this book, and wish I had read it when I was 10-12 years old. There are true examples from people's lives which helps make it more applicable, and then there are suggested activities, such as asking your mother for tips, praying for an hour, etc. If you actually try them out, they are useful. Some of it was convicting, and some of it was entertaining. There's a running story of a princess and peer pressure she faces as she waits for her prince. And she doesn't idly sit by waiting, either. There are also little cartoons illustrating various points. I recommend this for all young ladies and girls, especially those seeking to please God.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, June 8, 2009
I purchased this book for my 13- year old grandaughter. It is just wonderful!! She said it talks about things she did not know, but she is impressed. Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone needs to read this book!, June 7, 2010
I was raised in a Christian home, homeschooled, and tought that purity is one of Gods greatest gifts to us, but... what exactly are the qualifications for purity? and how on earth do you wait untill the real prince charming comes?
I am fourteen, and I am so glad that I have this book, if only I had read it a few years earlier.

with peers constintly talking about their boyfriends, the "cute guys" ect. you begin to consider, without really thinking about it, that its natural to have a boyfriend, and then if it doesnt "work out" another... after all you have to kiss a few toads before you find the prince right?
In this book Sarah answers all the questions you never thought to ask, and leaves you knowing that God is in control and his plans for your life are ultimatly best, God made you and knows you better than you do yourself even, so you know that his plans will surpass any you could ever imagine.

I am going to give this book to my cousins, and friends, and any girl I meet on the street, every young woman needs to read this book!
There are definatly some serious glitches with the modern American dating system, but how are we going to meet our future husband then? Sarah gracefully and immaculately teaches how we can use our single time at home to be a light and a guide, and wait patiently without being discontent for, not our best, not the worlds best, but Gods best. ... Editorial Review

This new volume in the blockbuster teen series puts faith first.

For teens who make God an integral part of their lives, teens who are sorting through doubts about whether God really cares about them, and teens who don't know God at all, Chicken Soup for the Christian Teenage Soul may be one of the most influential books they'll ever read.

These stories about love, friendship, forgiveness, making a difference, courage, dating (and lots more) show how God is at work in teenagers' lives. Teens share stories about how God has given them the courage to cope with the tough stuff, the joy to live a fulfilling life, the strength to persevere when they feel alone, and the love and confidence they need to feel good about themselves. This very special volume will also help them to use other teens' experiences to build a stronger relationship with God.

For teens tempted to use drugs, alcohol or other substances, Chicken Soup for the Christian Teenage Soul can be a lifeline to God. They will know that God cares what they think when it feels as if no one else does, and that he loves them no matter what. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The most inspirational book I have ever read, June 16, 2003
I never write reviews, but everyone needs to know how wonderful and what an impact this book can have on a person. I am not a very religious person, but I picked up this book and found, that being religious or not had nothing to do with enjoying and appreciating this book. I LOVED IT and could relate so much thank you KIMBERLY KIRBERGER, once again.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Read!!!, June 16, 2003
The minute I started reading this book I couldn't put it down. As an reader of the Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul series I was blown away by this particular book. I found it inspiring and moving, making me laugh and even cry. I recommend it to any teenager who wants to feel more connected to Christianity and regain their sense of faith.

4-0 out of 5 stars The "Test" was great!, May 29, 2003
I really thought that the story about cheating, "The Test", was a valuable lesson for all students, regardless of faith. The structure and craftsmanship was equisite. Over all, I am tiring of this series but have alot of hope for it now. Well done, Ms. Ayers and Canfield/Hansen of course.
Once again, this series has made an outstanding contribution to the lives of people everywhere. In these troubled times, it is truly a blessing that this thoughtful volume has been provided for Christian teens everywhere.
The reason why this series has struck such a chord with readers across generations is the feeling of authenticity it generates within readers. My only criticism is that some of the stories sometimes seem a bit formulaic. A striking exception is found in the story "The Test", which involves the dilemma of a student who cheats on a school exam. The narrative pulls off the rare combination of being impecably written while still ringing true with its audience. As someone who works with young people on a regular basis, I know it will inspire my students for years to come. Thank you.

This book is so awesome. I love a lot it's one of my favorites! It's short stories are definitely page turner and I would recommend it to anyone. The stories are constantly talking about inspiration and hope.

It doesn't matter your belief or religion it's still a good book and has good advice for anyone. The poems and stories and occasional bible verses really taught to believe in myself and to be confident and to appreciate life.

I hope you enjoy reading and appreciating the meaningfulness of this book and if you enjoyed this book then you might enjoy reading Chicken Soup for the Christian Soul. There pretty similar but it's for all ages!

5-0 out of 5 stars Chicken Soup!, May 21, 2006
I absolutely love all chicken soup books and this one was equally amazing. I thought that Chicken Soup for the Christian Teenage Soup was very well written. The stories were very realistic and I think that anyone could relate to them. It covered everyday issues like school, family, friends, and just faith in general. In short this book is very heartwarming and can be read by most everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great with Devotions, August 16, 2006
I read a story a night from this book after we read devotions at the dinner table. We all love the stories. Some of the stories our sad and make you think. Some are funny like the Lesson in Lavendar story which is one of our favorites on Compassion and Forgiveness. This story just happened to fit right with our Devotion readings from Sticky Situations 2 another great book. The book is geared for teens but we all can relate to the stories and enjoy them.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Chicken Soup" Books Make Great Gifts, February 23, 2006
I have to start by saying that I love the "Chicken Soup" books.
There are soooo many out there for so many different types of people. I bought this book as a gift for a family member. I couldn't help but read some of the stories before wrapping it. I may not be a teenager anymore, but reading the stories helped me remember to when I was. I think this book is not only great for teenagers, but perhaps the parents of teenagers as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great helping of Chicken Soup, January 30, 2006
I have yet to read a bad Chicken Soup book, and this one is no exception. The nice mix of stories make for an entertaining and interesting read, and there are life lessons to be gained from reading every single story.

This book is not just for teens. Anyone who loves Chicken Soup type stories will enjoy this book. It tugs at the heart strings and is a book you'll want to re-read again and again.

Sometimes the answers aren’t enough.Sometimes you want to know why they’re the answers.

Any Bible can answer questions. This is the one that explains why those answers are the answers.

The answers to what? To the questions you’ve been asking your parents, your teachers, your friends … yourself. What’s life all about and where do I fit in? What’s my life all about, and where do God, family, friends, and all the rest fit in? How do I know God even exists, and what do the life and death of Jesus have to do with me right here, right now? If God loves us all, why should I bother taking my Catholicism seriously? If all religions are pretty much the same, why be a Catholic at all?

Here is the inspired Word of God. Here is what God has revealed to us about himself simply because he loves us so much. Here is what the Catholic Church teaches about the Bible and Tradition and why it teaches those things. Why the Bible matters not just in the life of the Church but in your life. Here is how to read the Bible – how to understand, to "de-code," what its authors were saying to their particular audiences thousands of years ago. How to truly hear what the Holy Spirit is saying to you today.

"The Bible matters?" Yes. "Prove it!" That’s exactly what this book does as it takes a frank and honest look at God, Jesus, Church, prayer … and you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for youth, November 9, 2004
Amy Welborn's latest addition to the Prove It! Series is a great resource for teens. As an accompaniment to the complete New American Bible, this paperback edition includes a series of Prove It! inserts that make this a great Bible for teens and young adults. The book's introduction is addressed at the questions of why and how to read the Bible. Additional topics covered throughout the main sections of the Bible include answers to basic (and not so basic) questions about God, Jesus, the Church, prayer and more. A special concluding section entitled "the map" is an excellent compilation of important data and prayers that should form the basis of catechesis for any young Catholic. Along with all of our traditional prayers, the Stations of the Cross, the Mysteries of the Rosary and much more are included.
This light weight and compact Bible will be a great resource for your Catholic preteen, teen or young adult for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars An awesome bible for teens, September 27, 2007
What drew me to this particular bible, out of the rest of the Catholic teen bibles were the inserts by Amy Wellborn. I have, through other publications become familier with her as an author and commentator and really enjoy her insights and straight forward approach to her topics. As a catechist for the RCIA for teens this year, I was really looking for a Bible the teens in my group could really connect with and not see it at as another "classroom textbook". I ordered one for myself first at the beginning of the week and received it rather quickly (by the end of the week). When I received it I read through the introduction, checked the fine print, it has the Nihil Obstat & Imprimatur. I read all the inserts sprinkled through the OT and NT on God, Jesus, Prayer, the Church, You..et al,and finally in the back the "roadmap". I thought it was a very good bible, but I wanted to put it to the ultimate test....in the hands of a teen. It passed. This teen was so impressed, he wanted a copy and was sharing with it with other teens in our teen group and before long our DRE had a list of all the teens who wanted one. One of the main things our teens emphasized is that this Bible is not only easy to use, they especially liked the "prove it" inserts because it used language they understood without being completely dumbed down or full of fluff to soften theological truths....one of them even said it answered an important question he had been struggling with.
Regarding the version of the bible; as an instructor, I wanted it to be the NAB version, being that is what the Church uses (in the US)in the Mass scripture readings. The main reason for this though, is during "breaking open the word", during class & bible study, I found using the same version less confusing than other versions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Bible for Catholic Teens!, October 9, 2007
i bought a collection of these bibles for the bookshelf in my youth room...and, my teens are REALLY enjoying these bibles...they find them interesting and informative and i have had MANY of them ask where they can get one for themselves...as a youth minister, i am always concerned with making sure my teenagers are getting the best bibles to fit their needs...and, i think i have finally found a winner!

    5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome, April 8, 2008
It's a great complete bible and it comes with great extra information that will help you understand the text more. it is in a great format that is easy to read. Amy Welborn's inserts are easy to understand teachings about the bible! This is a great teen bible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised, November 3, 2009
Of all the teen bibles I looked at, this one had the busyist cover. Don't judge a book by it's cover, I guess! However, inside was a pleasant surprise. The inserts were placed appropriately, not distracting from the bible contents. It was easy to hold and the print was easily read, unlike some teenage bibles I've looked at.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy It For Your Teens!, September 12, 2009

5-0 out of 5 stars Love & Friendship - not quite as good as rest of the series, December 29, 2002
The Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul series is a wonderful series written by teens for teens and this book is a spin-off, if you like, of that very successful, popular series.

However, I found the stories and range of topics to be not quite as good as those found in the other teenage Chicken Soup books. The Friendship section had some beautiful stories in it as is to be expected from this series but I found some of the stores in other sections such as Growing Up to be cliched and boring. While I found it hard to put the other books down, this one was quite easy to put away.

If you are looking for a really good Chicken Soup book I would recommend Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul II or even the first or third books rather than this one. Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul - Love & Friendship lacks the same edge and originality as the other books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love and Friendship, May 18, 2004
Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul on Love and Friendship a great book for teenagers, because it is real life stories written by teens all over the U.S. The stories in this book are about relationships and dating, and friendships. Most of the stories in this book are very happy and give the reader tips about relationships with people, but there are also a few stories written by heart broken teens.
Every story in this book can help someone in some way because they either have a lesson to be learned or they are just great stories to read so maybe someday you can be like one of the teenagers in this book.
This is a book that can be read again and again by adults as well as teens of course, because many adults face some of the same problems as teens face when it comes to relationships. When ever you get a chance to read this book take it. Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul on Love and Friendshipis a book that you will not regret reading because this is such an awesome book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tinfoil and a Hair Ribbon, May 4, 2004
Hi, my name is Ariel I read the book "Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul on Love and Friendship". It was a great book! My favorite story was "Tinfiol and a Hair Ribbon". It made me cry! I'm 12 yaers old and not that emotional and it must have been a good story or else I wouldn't have cried. I think all teenagers should know the meenihng of "LOVE" before just saying it! A lot of people say it at my school and it gets anyoing if your just saying it without even meaning it! I thought it was a great book! I hope to see more books!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure excellence, June 28, 2003
This is an excellent book. It is so informative of real teenage problems on love and friendship. It has helped me to understand that I am not the only girl who has to deal with bad relationships between friends and boyfriends. And you can tell this is a good book because I love to shop and when I went to the mall I baught a book (this book) which I NEVER do, but I just wanted it that bad. This truly is a great book and every parent who has a teenage daughter just has to buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Chicken Soup For The Teenage Soul on Love and Friendship, March 15, 2007
This Book Chicken Soup was about teens finding their way around life. Teens finding love and breaking up and getting back together. Finding their out who their true friends are. Finding out the true the meaning of love. Finding out who they can lean on when they are down. This book had different stories about love and friendship. This book took places everywhere even though it had amny different stories in it. It took places on a soccer field, at school, at home. It took places in so many places that it really doesn't have a setting. The plot was different things. Like you realize that you was in love with your bestfriend's boyfiend and you didn't want her to know that cause you didn't want ya'll friendship to end all because of a boy she went with and because you was in love with him. The conflict was that a lot people got hurt in this book because of the word love. Some people got cheated on and heartbroken and dumped because of this word love. If you don't mean it then don't say it cause alot of people can get hurt because of that word. Some people founded out who their real friends were. Some people left their friends over a guy/girl and left them hanging. Then they started to realize who their real friends were. The resolution was that the people who did wrong they realized what they did was wrong and asked the friends that they once had to forgive them some of them forgave them and some of them said no cause you might hurt me again. By Porsha S. Hamilton

5-0 out of 5 stars Best yet, March 15, 2004
After reading Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul on Love and Friendship I realized how terrible things can be. It also shows you how to make the best of things that you think are the worst. I never thought that Chicken Soup books were for me until I read this one.
You can make life into whatever you want it to be. You shouldnt let guys or friends step in your way. This Cihcken Soup teaches you about all the problems and situations you come across with guys and friends. If either your firend or your boyfriend tried to step in your way of accomplishing something they dont really care because friends and boyfriends dont do that. So if your interested in love, relationships, and friendships then this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite, November 15, 2002
I love all the Chicken Soup books, especially the ones for teens. I have read all the teen ones and about 5 of the other ones. This one is my favorite so far. I wonder so much about how other girls feel about guys and relationships for real and I don't think anything has ever explained it better than some of the stories in this book. I have a boyfriend and I think we are going to break up soon and I was so scared. It really helps sto see other girls are ok and also guys really do have feelings.
The friendship part was just as good, even though I didn't think it would be. It made me think about my friends and it made me want to treat them better. I guess I have been lucky becasue I am still friends with the same girls I was friends with in Jr high. Everyone should read this book. I loved it!!

My daughter, who is not a reader, read this cover to cover in one sitting. My seventh grade students, their teachers and parents love it. All of our copies have waiting lists. Teens and adults involved with teens relate to Sean Covey's reflections and practical advice. This is a great conversation starter between teens and parents!

Hey. I am a 13-year-old girl, and my sister who is 23 bought me this book. I have read and marked multiple pages for future reading. This book has really increased my outlook on life! I suffer from depression and anxiety, yet I feel so happy when I read this book each night. I believe that even adults would be enthralled with this book. So my conclusion is that if you have [have the money] or whatever, get this book!

what was inside was basically some quotes or extract from the book--the seven habits of highly effective teens which I highly recommend. However this book helps you to stay focus on one point everyday, and keep inspiring you throughout the day, you may also refer to the book--the seven habits of the highly effective teens as the page number is included as reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love notes for teens....., December 5, 2008
I don't know if my teens will take the self-initiative to read a daily reflection each morning, but I do know my teens wants to feel loved and know their parents are connected and understanding of their worlds. I recommend tearing out a page each day, writing a personal relevant note below each reflection, and slipping it in your teen's backpack, lunch bag, jean or overcoat pocket, to let them know throughout each day that you are there and care. Buy this book for yourself to use in the way recommended, and buy the companion "6 Most Important Decisions You'll Ever Make" (also by Covey) for your teen. ... Read more
